29 December to 4 January 2014

The Glossy Ibis remained at Oulton Marshes all week, while single Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes, 2 January, and Oulton Marshes, 4 January.

The two Rough-legged Buzzards were present at Haddiscoe Island throughout the week. Other notable raptors included a male Hen Harrier and three Marsh Harriers at Haddiscoe Island and a ringtail Hen Harrier at nearby Fritton Marshes, 1 January, and a Merlin, a Peregrine and two ringtail Hen Harriers at Haddiscoe Island and a male Hen Harrier at Fritton Marshes, 2 January. Barn Owls were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (two), 3 January, and Oulton Marshes, 4 January.

A Long-tailed Duck was seen at Burgh Castle, 30 December, and two Bewick’s Swans commuted between Peto’s Marsh, Carlton Colville and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 1 January. A count of eight Woodcock was made at Waveney Forest, Fritton at dusk on 3 January.

Notable passerines included a Cetti’s Warbler at Oulton Marshes, 1 January, two Chiffchaffs at Oulton Marshes, 2 January, two Mealy Redpolls at North Cove SWT Reserve, 3 January and two Firecrests at Burgh Castle, 4 January.

22 to 28 December 2013

The Glossy Ibis remained at Oulton Marshes throughout the week. Whooper Swans were seen flying over Castle Marsh, North Cove (ten) and Oulton Marshes (six), 26 December, and a count of 49 Mute Swans was made at Carlton Marshes, 28 December. Single Little Egrets were noted at Oulton Marshes, 25 December, and Haddiscoe Island (three), Belton Marshes and Carlton Marshes, 28 December.

The two Rough-legged Buzzards were present at Haddiscoe Island all week, and were joined by a Peregrine and a Marsh Harrier, 28 December, while a male Hen Harrier seen at Peto’s Marsh, Carlton Colville, 28 December. Barn Owls were recorded at Beccles Marshes, 26 December, and Haddiscoe Island, 28 December.

Waders at Burgh Castle Flats on 22 December included 30 Redshanks and four Curlews while a flock of 500 Lapwings flew overhead, and a Woodcock was noted at Nebb Wood, Flixton, 26 December. Wigeon numbers had increased to 220 at Oulton Marshes, 24 December.

Notable passerines included two Bearded Tits at Burgh Castle and two Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes, 22 December, a Chiffchaff at Oulton Marshes, 25 December, six Lesser Redpolls at Barsham Marshes, 26 December, and three Bearded Tits and a flock of 23 Crossbills at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 28 December.

15 to 21 December 2013

A Glossy Ibis was found at Oulton Marshes, 19 December and was present again on the 21st.

The two Rough-legged Buzzards remained at Haddiscoe Island all week and were supported by a Peregrine and five Marsh Harriers, 15 December, an immature male Merlin, 17 December and a male Hen Harrier, 19 December.

Haddiscoe Island also held a flock of 4,000 Pink-footed Geese, 17 December, while a count of 50 Egyptian Geese was made at Beccles Quay, 19 December. Little Egrets were recorded at Fritton Marshes, 15 December and Haddiscoe Island (five), 17 December.

Two Grey Wagtails were a surprise find in a member’s garden in the centre of Beccles on 17 December, a Chiffchaff was seen at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 19 December, and 28 Magpies were counted at Oulton Marshes, 21 December.

8 to 14 December 2013

The two Rough-legged Buzzards first seen last week remained at Haddiscoe Island all week. Other raptors at Haddiscoe Island included two Peregrines, 9 December and a ringtail Hen Harrier and 20 Marsh Harriers at dusk on 14 December, while a male Hen Harrier flew north over Worlingham, 12 December.

A Spotted Redshank was seen at Haddiscoe Island, 8 December, while Woodcock were noted at Waveney Forest, Fritton (four), 9 December and along Waddling Lane, Somerleyton, 11 December.

A large finch flock at North Cove SWT reserve included 50 Lesser Redpolls and 30 Siskins, 8 December.

1 to 7 December 2013

Two Rough-legged Buzzards were present at Haddiscoe Island, 7 December, together with two Peregrines, two Marsh Harriers and a Barn Owl, while two Marsh Harriers were also noted at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 1 December.

Records of notable passerines involved a Firecrest along Back Lane, Burgh Castle and 12 Lesser Redpolls and 30 Siskins at North Cove SWT Reserve, 1 December.

Waders at Burgh Castle Flats included a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Curlew and 60 Dunlin, 1 December and 20 Black-tailed Godwits, 6 December, while a Woodcock was noted at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 7 December.

Finally, a feral Ruddy Shelduck was present at Castle Marsh, 1 December and a Little Egret was seen at Redenhall, 5 December.

24 to 30 November

A male Hen Harrier was present at Westhorpe from 25 to 29 November. A count of Marsh Harriers coming into roost at Burgh Castle totalled 24 on 24 November, with Marsh Harriers also recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (six), 25 November, Beccles Marshes, 26 November and Fritton Marshes (two), 30 November.

Notable passerines included two Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 November, a Cetti’s Warbler at Beccles Marshes, 26 November, two Bramblings at Fritton Decoy, 27 November, eight Crossbills at Ashby, 28 November and two Lesser Redpolls and a Chiffchaff at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 30 November.

A flock of 102 Golden Plovers was present at Fritton Marshes, 30 November. Single Little Egrets were noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 November and Fritton Marshes, 30 November, while 299 Cormorants flew in to roost at Fritton Decoy, 27 November.

17 to 23 November

A Black Redstart was present along Foxglove Close, Worlingham from 17 to 21 November. A Chiffchaff and two Bearded Tits were seen at Carlton Marshes, 17 November, while Cetti’s Warblers were noted at Carlton Marshes, 17 November and Beccles Marshes, 19 November.

Other notable sightings on 19 November involved a flock of 1000 Pink-footed Geese which flew north-west over Somerleyton, two Redshanks at Beccles Marshes and a Marsh Harrier at Herringfleet Marshes.

10 to 16 November

A flock of six Crossbills was present at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 12 November, while a count of 110 Stock Doves was made at Thorpe-with-Haddiscoe, 12 November.

Notable wildfowl included a group of 19 Pink-footed Geese at Peto’s Marsh, Carlton Colville, 16 November.

Single Woodcock were noted at Redgrave Fen and Beccles Marshes, 12 November.

Finally, two Marsh Harriers were seen at Fritton Marshes and a Barn Owl at Thorpe-with-Haddiscoe, 12 November.

3 to 9 November

Firecrests were seen in gardens at Burgh Castle, 3 November and Worlingham (two), 9 November. A Kingfisher and a Cetti’s Warbler were noted at Beccles Marshes, 7 November.

Notable wildfowl included two Whooper Swans at Aldeby shooting lakes, 6 November and a flock of 17 Pink-footed Geese which flew east over Ashby, 9 November. A Woodcock was seen at The Dell, Beccles, 3 November.

27 October to 2 November

Notable waders included two Jack Snipe at Oulton Marshes, 1 November and a single Jack Snipe and 12 Ruff at Thorpe-with-Haddiscoe, 2 November. Little Egrets were noted at Castle Marshes, North Cove, 29 October, Carlton Marshes (four), 31 October and Oulton Marshes, 1 November.

A Hen Harrier was present at Oulton Marshes, 1 November, while a Marsh Harrier was noted at Thorpe-with-Haddiscoe, 2 November.

A Kingfisher was seen at Castle Marshes, 31 October, while a count of two thousand Starlings was made at nearby Carlton Marshes on the same day.
