Four Tundra Bean Geese, two White-fronted Geese and 500 Pink-footed Geese were feeding on fields along Border Lane, Ashby, 25 December, while at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 98 White-fronted Geese were present, 27 December, 108 Greylag Geese, 29 December and 150 Mute Swans, 31 December. Other notable wildfowl included a Whooper Swan at Outney Common, Bungay, 26 December and 160 Wigeon at Oulton Marshes, 29 December, while records of Pink-footed Geese included 600 in flight over St Olaves, 26 December and 400 in flight over Herringfleet Marshes, 29 December.

Three Waxwings were present along Beccles Road, Bungay, 30 December. A Snow Bunting was seen at Haddiscoe Island and 12 Lesser Redpolls at Outney Common, 27 December and two Kingfishers at Beccles Quay, 28 December. Stonechats were recorded at Castle Marsh (five), Carlton Marshes (two) and Haddiscoe Island (two), 27 December and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 29 December; Bearded Tits at Oulton Marshes (30), Haddiscoe Island (eight), Castle Marsh (four) and Carlton Marshes (two), 27 December and Herringfleet Marshes (four), 29 December and Cetti’s Warblers at Castle Marsh, 27 December and Oulton Marshes, 29 December.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included three Marsh Harriers and a Barn Owl, 26 December and two Peregrines and five Short-eared Owls, 27 December. Marsh Harriers were noted at Carlton Marshes (seven), 27 December and Castle Marsh (three) and Oulton Marshes, 29 December and three Buzzards were seen at Castle Marsh, 31 December. Short-eared Owls were hunting at Carlton Marshes (two) and Oulton Marshes (three), 27 December and Barn Owls at Castle Marsh, 27 December, Herringfleet Marshes and Lopham Fen, 29 December and Oulton Marshes, 30 December.

A Green Sandpiper and two Curlews were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 27 December and a Redshank at Oulton Marshes, 30 December. A Bittern was seen at Oulton Marshes, 30 December, while Little Egrets were reported from Haddiscoe Island (nine), Carlton Marshes (two) and Castle Marsh (two), 27 December.

19 Tundra Bean Geese, 13 White-fronted Geese and 300 Pink-footed Geese were feeding on fields along Border Lane, Ashby, 24 December. A Tundra Bean Goose also flew over Carlton Marshes, 22 December, while White-fronted Geese were also noted at Castle Marsh, North Cove (80) and Carlton Marshes, 18 December and Haddiscoe Island (six), 21 December and Pink-footed Geese at Oulton (140 flew south-west), 19 December, Belton (500 flew north), 20 December and Carlton Marshes (50 flew west), 22 December.

Five Water Pipits were present at Carlton Marshes, 18 December and a Mealy Redpoll and 40 Siskins were seen at Wicker Well, Somerleyton, 24 December. A Grey Wagtail was noted at Oulton, 18 December and two Bearded Tits at Oulton Marshes, 22 December. Stonechats were recorded at Carlton Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen, 18 December, Beccles Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 20 December and Broome (two), 23 December; Lesser Redpolls at Belton Marshes (20), 18 December and Blundeston (two) and Somerleyton, 22 December; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (seven) and Oulton Marshes, 22 December and Kingfishers at Redgrave Fen, 18 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 22 December. A pre-roost gathering of 60,000 Starlings was observed at Lopham Fen, 18 December.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Peregrine, five Marsh Harriers, seven Short-eared Owls and two Barn Owls, 18 December. A Merlin was seen at Belton Marshes, 18 December and a Red Kite at Ditchingham, 24 December. Marsh Harriers were noted at Carlton Marshes (two), 18 December and Oulton Marshes, 20 December, with three Buzzards at Blundeston Marshes and also three Buzzards at South Lopham, 22 December. Short-eared Owls were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 18 December and Oulton Marshes (two), 22 December and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes, 18 December and Oulton Marshes (two), 22 December.

Waders at Burgh Castle Flats on 21 December included 132 Avocets, 160 Black-tailed Godwits and 150 Dunlin. Elsewhere, a Green Sandpiper and a Redshank were seen at Carlton Marshes and a Woodcock at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 18 December, two Redshanks at Beccles Marshes, 20 December and a Green Sandpiper at Haddiscoe Island, 22 December. Finally, Little Egrets were reported from Carlton Marshes (nine), 18 December and Oulton Marshes, 20 December.

Two Water Pipits were seen at Carlton Marshes, 15 December. Chiffchaffs were recorded at Flixton GP, 11 December, Carlton Marshes (three), 15 December and Oulton Marshes (two), 17 December; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (four), 15 December and Oulton Marshes (five), 17 December; Bearded Tits at Oulton Marshes (four) and Burgh Castle (three), 11 December and Carlton Marshes (seven), 13 December; Stonechats at Oulton Marshes (three) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 11 December and Carlton Marshes (four), 15 December; and Kingfishers at Haddiscoe Island, 11 December and Carlton Marshes, 13 December.

A flock of 80 White-fronted Geese was present at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 15 December, 100 Pink-footed Geese flew over Carlton Marshes, 17 December, while at Burgh Castle, 100 Greylag Geese and 500 Teal were noted, 11 December and 2,500 Pink-footed Geese, 17 December. Amongst an amazing array of wildfowl, many of captive origin, at Flixton GP on 11 December were 260 Coots, 960 Greylag Geese, 165 Mute Swans, 1,500 Mallard, 240 Wigeon, 120 Tufted Duck, 100 Pintail, 62 Pochard, eight Red-crested Pochard, four Canvasback, two Chiloe Wigeon, two Ferruginous Duck, two New Zealand Scaup, two Pacific Black Duck and a Falcated Duck.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included three Peregrines, six Marsh Harriers, three Buzzards, ten Short-eared Owls and two Barn Owls, 11 December, while at Carlton Marshes, two Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl were reported, 11 December and a Marsh Harrier, 15 December. Elsewhere, a Red Kite was seen at Beccles and a Peregrine at Burgh Castle, with Marsh Harriers noted at Burgh Castle (five) and Oulton Marshes, 11 December.

Waders at Burgh Castle included 21 Curlews and ten Redshanks, 11 December and four Black-tailed Godwits, two Dunlin and 1,300 Lapwings, 17 December. Two Ruff were present at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, two Green Sandpipers at Flixton GP and four Redshanks at Carlton Marshes, 11 December and 11 Snipe at Oulton Marshes, 17 December. Finally, Little Egrets were recorded at Oulton Marshes (two), 11 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 15 December.

A flock of 16 White-fronted Geese was present at Belton Marshes, 8 December, while Pink-footed Geese were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (1,000), 4 December and Herringfleet Marshes (100 flew north), 5 December.

A single Waxwing was seen along Hollow Grove Way, Carlton Colville, 7 December, a Blackcap in a garden at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 4 December, a Water Pipit at Carlton Marshes, 6 December and a Grey Wagtail at Oulton, 9 December. Bearded Tits were recorded at Belton Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 4 December, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 5 December and Carlton Marshes (30), 6 December; Stonechats at Belton Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 4 December and Carlton Marshes, 5 December; Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 December and Carlton Marshes (four), 6 December and Kingfishers at Belton Marshes, 4 December and Burgh Castle, 5 December.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Hen Harrier, a Peregrine, 12 Marsh Harriers and eight Buzzards, 4 December and three Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl, 5 December. Elsewhere, three Buzzards were seen at Carlton Marshes, 5 December, Marsh Harriers were reported from Burgh Castle and Oulton Marshes, 5 December, Carlton Marshes (two), 6 December and Lopham Fen (two), 10 December; Short-eared Owls from Waveney Forest, Fritton (five), 4 December, Burgh Castle, 5 December, Carlton Marshes, 6 December and Barn Owls from Carlton Marshes, 4 December and Burgh Castle, 5 December.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included two Redshanks, 5 December and a Jack Snipe, 6 December, while a Ruff, 43 Black-tailed Godwits, a Curlew, 18 Snipe and eight Dunlin were noted at Belton Marshes and 11 Woodcocks at Waveney Forest, 4 December. Finally, Little Egrets were present at Belton Marshes (four), 4 December, Oulton Marshes, 5 December and Carlton Marshes (three), 6 December.

A Water Pipit was seen at Carlton Marshes, 30 November, a Grey Wagtail at Oulton, 29 November and a Chiffchaff at Carlton Marshes, 2 December. Bramblings were noted at Carlton Marshes (two), 1 December and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 3 December; Bearded Tits at Haddiscoe Island (four), 29 November, Oulton Marshes (16), 29 November and Carlton Marshes (ten), 2 December; Stonechats at Haddiscoe Island (three), 29 November, Oulton Marshes (six), 29 November and Carlton Marshes (two), 2 December; Cetti’s Warblers at Haddiscoe Island (two) and Oulton Marshes (two), 29 November and Carlton Marshes (seven), 2 December and Kingfishers at Carlton Marshes, 1 December and Beccles (two), 3 December.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a ringtail Hen Harrier, two Peregrines and nine Marsh Harriers, 27 November, a Merlin, four Short-eared Owls and three Barn Owls, 29 November and four Buzzards, 3 December, while sightings at Carlton Marshes included three Buzzards and two Short-eared Owls, 29 November, two Marsh Harriers, 1 December and a Barn Owl, 2 December. A male Hen Harrier was seen at Worlingham Marshes, 27 November and a Marsh Harrier at Oulton Marshes, 29 November.

Waders at Haddiscoe Island included a Ruff and 1,000 Golden Plovers, 27 November and a Green Sandpiper, a Curlew and a Redshank, 29 November, while at Carlton Marshes a count of 102 Snipe was made on 29 November and six Redshank were present on 3 December. Finally, Little Egrets were recorded at Oulton Marshes (two), 29 November, Carlton Marshes (two), 2 December and Haddiscoe Island (ten), 3 December.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Rough-legged Buzzard, a Hen Harrier, five Marsh Harriers, five Buzzards, three Short-eared Owls and three Barn Owls, 23 November and two Peregrines, 25 November. Elsewhere, Marsh Harriers were recorded at Burgh Castle (three), 24 November and Oulton Marshes, 25 November, four Short-eared Owls were seen at Carlton Marshes, 26 November and Barn Owls were reported from Barnby, 25 November and Carlton Marshes, 26 November.

A Spoonbill was seen in flight at Haddiscoe Island, 24 November and a Bittern at Oulton Marshes, 25 November, while Little Egrets were noted at Haddiscoe Island (15), Carlton Marshes, 23 November, Burgh Castle (46 roosted), Castle Marsh, North Cove and Oulton Marshes, 25 November and Mendham Marshes, 26 November.

A Waxwing was seen along Mill Lane, Barnby, 24 November, a Chiffchaff at Carlton Marshes, 25 November and a Blackcap at Somerleyton and a Grey Wagtail at Oulton, 26 November. Stonechats were recorded at Fritton Marshes (three), 23 November, Carlton Marshes (four) and Burgh Castle, 25 November and Mendham Marshes (two), 26 November; Bearded Tits at Haddiscoe Island, 23 November and Carlton Marshes (four), 25 November; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (two) and Oulton Marshes, 25 November and Kingfishers at Haddiscoe Island, 23 November and Weybread GP, 26 November.

A flock of 1,700 Pink-footed Geese flew west at St Olaves, 24 November and four White-fronted Geese and 1,000 Pink-footed Geese were noted at Haddiscoe Island the following day.

Waders included a Green Sandpiper at Waveney Forest, Fritton and a Redshank at Carlton Marshes, 23 November, five Black-tailed Godwits, 35 Redshanks and four Curlews at Burgh Castle, 24 November and 500 Golden Plover at Haddiscoe Island and two Woodcock at Burgh Castle, 25 November.

Three Cattle Egrets were present at Burgh Castle on marshes north of Back Lane, 13 to 16 November, with one still there on 17 November. A Great White Egret was seen at Carlton Marshes, 13 November and Little Egrets were noted at Haddiscoe Island (five) and Carlton Marshes (four), 13 November.

A Black Redstart was seen on the tower of St Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, 13 November, with four Water Pipits at nearby Carlton Marshes on the same day and one at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 16 November. A Grey Wagtail was noted at Oulton, 14 November, a Brambling at Aldeby, 18 November and a Chiffchaff at Burgh Castle, 19 November. Stonechats were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two) and Haddiscoe Island, 13 November, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 15 November and Lopham Fen (two), 16 November; Bearded Tits at Haddiscoe Island (three) and Carlton Marshes (two), 13 November and Burgh Castle (four) and Lopham Fen, 19 November; Cetti’s Warblers at Haddiscoe Island, 13 November, Carlton Marshes (three), 14 November and Herringfleet Marshes (four), 15 November and Kingfishers at Beccles Marshes, 13 November, Lopham Fen, 15 November and Carlton Marshes, 17 November. A count of 100 Skylarks was made at Carlton Marshes, 13 November and pre-roost gatherings of Starlings included 45,000 at Lopham Fen, 13 November and 4,000 at Herringfleet Marshes, 15 November.

Elsewhere, Marsh Harriers were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two), 13 November, Herringfleet Marshes, 15 November and Burgh Castle, 19 November, Short-eared Owls at Carlton Marshes (three) and Haddiscoe Marshes (four, in addition to those at Haddiscoe Island), 13 November and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes (two), 13 November and Herringfleet Marshes, 15 November.

Nine Bewick’s Swans were present at Carlton Marshes, 18 November and Pink-footed Geese were reported from Haddiscoe Island (100) and Carlton Marshes (six flew over), 13 November and Herringfleet Marshes (600 flew over), 15 November.

The wader highlight was a Jack Snipe at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 16 November. 200 Golden Plover were present at Haddiscoe Island, 13 November, with 1,000 Lapwings at the same site, 16 November, 52 Curlew at Burgh Castle, 19 November and Snipe at Carlton Marshes (20), 13 November and Lopham Fen (15), 14 November. Finally, a count of 300 Great Black-backed Gulls was made at Burnt Hill, Carlton Colville, 17 November.

Seven Waxwings were seen along Rectory Road, Carlton Colville, 6 November and a further 12 along Broom Gardens, Belton, 8 November. Two late Swallows were also noted at Rectory Road, Carlton Colville, 6 November, a Water Pipit and two Cetti’s Warblers were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 8 November and a Grey Wagtail at Redenhall, 11 November. Stonechats were reported from Lopham Fen (two) and Fritton Marshes, 11 November, Bearded Tits from Fritton Marshes, 6 November, Carlton Marshes (two), 8 November and Lopham Fen and Oulton Marshes (20), 11 November and Kingfishers from Fritton Marshes, 6 November and Carlton Marshes and Redgrave Fen, 11 November. The pre-roost gathering of Starlings at Lopham Fen numbered 50,000 on 11 November

A Great White Egret was present at Haddiscoe Island, 10 and 11 November, while Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (three) and Lopham Fen, 8 November and Fritton Marshes, 11 November.

A male Hen Harrier was seen at Fritton Marshes, 11 November. Marsh Harriers were reported from Haddiscoe Island (16), 6 November, Carlton Marshes (two) and Lopham Fen, 8 November and Oulton Marshes, 11 November and notable sightings of Buzzards included three at Haddiscoe Island, 6 November and three at Carlton Marshes, 8 November. Short-eared Owls were seen at Carlton Marshes, 8 November and Haddiscoe Island (two), 11 November and Barn Owls at Waveney Forest, Fritton (two), 6 November, Carlton Marshes, 8 November and Lopham Fen (two), 11 November.

Six Bewick’s Swans flew west over Waveney Forest, 6 November and Pink-footed Geese were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (2,000) and Blundeston (1,100 flew west), 11 November.

Two Jack Snipe were seen at Barsham Marshes, 8 November, with one at Carlton Marshes on the same day together with 23 Snipe and a Dunlin. A flock of 70 Curlews was present at Haddiscoe Island, 6 November and single Woodcock were recorded at St Olaves, 10 November and Waveney Forest the following day.

Waxwings remained along Rectory Road, Carlton Colville throughout the week, with two present, 30 October to 2 November, nine, 3 November, four, 4 November and five, 5 November. Two Bramblings were seen at St Olaves, 1 November and a Grey Wagtail at Outney Common, Bungay the following day. Stonechats were noted at Broome and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 30 October, Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes (three) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 30 October and Cetti’s Warblers at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 30 October and Carlton Marshes (two), 3 November. Kingfishers were reported from Beccles Quay, 30 October and Carlton Marshes, 1 November.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included two Marsh Harriers, three Buzzards, a Short-eared Owl and two Barn Owls, 30 October and a male Hen Harrier, 5 November. Two Marsh Harriers were noted at Carlton Marshes, 3 November, with a Short-eared Owl and a Barn Owl seen at the same site, 30 October.

A Green Sandpiper was seen at Outney Common, 2 November and a Woodcock at Carlton Marshes the following day. A flock of 14 Pink-footed Geese flew north at St Olaves, 1 November and three Little Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes, 3 November.

The valley joined in the influx of Waxwings along the east coast with sightings at Hollow Lane, Carlton Colville, 25 October, Sands Lane, Oulton, 28 October and Rectory Road, Carlton Colville (four), 29 October. A Brambling was seen at Ashby and a Grey Wagtail and 40 Siskins at St Olaves, 28 October. Stonechats were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 23 October and Herringfleet Marshes (three), 26 October and Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 26 October and Carlton Marshes (20), 29 October. A Cetti’s Warbler was noted at Herringfleet Marshes and a Kingfisher at Carlton Marshes, 26 October.

Marsh Harriers were recorded at Carlton Marshes (three) and Herringfleet Marshes (three), 26 October, Short-eared Owls at Carlton Marshes (three), 26 October and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 29 October and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes, 23 October and Beccles Marshes the following day.

A count of 30 Snipe was made at Carlton Marshes, 26 October and 200 Pink-footed Geese flew north over St Olaves, 28 October.
