WBC Sightings

10 to 16 February 2013

A Rough-legged Buzzard was again present on Haddiscoe Island all week, and was joined by a second bird on 11 to 14 February. Merlins were seen along Marsh Lane, Flixton, 11 February, and Haddiscoe Island, 15 February, and Peregrines at Haddiscoe Island, 10 February, and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 14 February. A male Hen Harrier was present at Oulton Marshes, 15 February, and Herringfleet Marshes, 16 February, and a ringtail was noted at Haddiscoe Marshes, also 16 February. Marsh Harriers were recorded at Beccles Marshes, 12 February, and Barsham Marshes and Burgh Castle, 16 February, while six Buzzards flew north at Barsham, 15 February, and ten were in the air together over Somerleyton Marshes, 16 February. Two Short-eared Owls were hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 12 February, and Barn Owls were seen at Barsham Church and Marsh Lane, Flixton, 11 February, Beccles Marshes and Valley Farm, Homersfield, 12 February, and Barsham Marshes and Fen Farm, Bungay, 15 February.

Two Whooper Swans were present at Barnaby Marshes, 10 and 11 February, while 20 Bewick’s Swans were seen at Wheatacre Marshes, 16 February, and eight flew west over Oulton Marshes on the same day. Other notable wildfowl included a redhead Goldeneye at Homersfield GP, 12 February, and 20 White-fronted Geese and the regular feral Ruddy Shelduck at Haddiscoe Island, 14 February.

A flock of 37 Waxwings flew over Waveney Forest, Fritton, 16 February. Other notable winter visitors included a Water Pipit at Haddiscoe Island and a flock of 150 Fieldfares near Barsham Water Treatment Works, 12 February, a Brambling along Cut Throat Lane, Beccles, 12 to 15 February. Two Bearded Tits were noted at Burgh Castle, 16 February, and Kingfishers were reported from Flixton Marshes (near Lowestoft), 11 February, and Barsham Marshes and Earsham GP, 12 February.

A Bittern was seen at Castle Marsh, 11 February, while Little Egrets were noted at Flixton Marshes (near Lowestoft, three), 11 February, Earsham GP and Wortwell, 12 February, Homersfield Bridge (two), 15 February, and Barsham Marshes, 16 February.

Wader highlights at Burgh Castle Flats on 16 February included 130 Black-tailed Godwits and 54 Curlews, while 55 Black-tailed Godwits were also present at Geldeston Marshes, 12 February. Finally, a Green Sandpiper was seen at Shipmeadow, 12 February, and a Woodcock at nearby Geldeston, 12 February.
