WBC Sightings

10 to 16 May 2015

Notable passerines included a Firecrest at Lopham Fen, 10 May and a Wheatear at Carlton Marshes the following day. The first Spotted Flycatcher of the year was recorded at Burgh Castle, 11 May, while other summer visitors included three Turtle Doves at Belton Common, also 11 May, Cuckoos at Beccles Marshes, 10 May, Lopham Fen (five), 11 May, Carlton Marshes (two), 15 May and Oulton Marshes (three), 16 May and a Grasshopper Warbler at Carlton Marshes, 15 May. A Grey Wagtail was noted at Ellingham Mill, 12 May and four Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes, 10 May. Cetti’s Warblers were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two), Herringfleet Marshes (two), Beccles Marshes and Burgh Castle, 10 May, Oulton Marshes (four) and Somerleyton, 16 May and Kingfishers at Beccles Marshes, 10 May and Lopham Fen, 11 May.

A pair of Garganey was present at Oulton Marshes, 11 and 16 May and two drake Mandarins at Fritton Lake, 14 May.

Hobbies were hunting at Carlton Marshes and St Olaves, 10 May, Lopham Fen (four), 12 May, while a Peregrine was noted at Gillingham, 12 May. Short-eared Owls were seen at Carlton Marshes, 10 May and Oulton Marshes, 16 May and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen, 10 May and Beccles Marshes, 15 May.

Waders included a Greenshank at Carlton Marshes and a Common Sandpiper and a Redshank at Flixton GP, 10 May, with another Common Sandpiper at Carlton Marshes, 16 May. Finally, Little Egrets were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Burgh Castle, 10 May, Oulton Marshes (two) and Carlton Marshes, 11 May.
