A Tundra Bean Goose and a Brent Goose were present at Flixton Marshes (near Lowestoft), 11 January, while counts of Pink-footed Geese included 1500 at Wheatacre Marshes, 13 January, 270 at Haddiscoe Marshes, 16 January and 1000 at Flixton Marshes, 300 east at Waveney Forest, Fritton and 300 south at St Olaves, 17 January. Whooper Swans were recorded at Aldeby shooting lakes (11), 11 January, Carlton Marshes (eight), 15 January and Beccles Quay (eight flew west), 16 January, while 12 Bewick’s Swans were seen at Carlton Marshes, 17 January. Five Goosanders also flew west at Carlton Marshes on the same date.
Juvenile Glaucous Gulls were present at Aldeby shooting lakes, 13 January and Carlton Marshes, 15 and 16 January, with two at Carlton Marshes, 17 January. A Bittern was seen at Fisher Row, Oulton, 11 January, while Little Egrets were recorded at Belton Marshes, 11 January, Carlton Marshes, 13 January and Lopham Fen, 16 January.
Raptors noted at Haddiscoe Island during the week included a Rough-legged Buzzard, a ringtail Hen Harrier and eight Marsh Harriers, 11 January, a male Hen Harrier and a Barn Owl, 13 January and a Merlin and three Short-eared Owls, 17 January. Elsewhere, Peregrines were seen at Burgh Castle, 11 January, Worlingham Marshes, 14 January and Carlton Marshes, 16 January, Marsh Harriers at Lopham Fen, Oulton Marshes and Castle Marsh, 11 January, Somerleyton Marshes (five) and Burgh Castle (two), 13 January, Worlingham Marshes (two), 14 January and Beccles Marshes (two), 15 January, with four Buzzards at Castle Marsh, 13 January. Short-eared Owls were also present at Belton Marshes and Carlton Marshes, 17 January and Barn Owls at Belton Marshes and Lopham Fen, 11 January, Burgh Castle, 12 January, Carlton Marshes, 16 January and Castle Marsh, 17 January.
A Water Pipit was seen at Carlton Marshes, 13 and 15 January and a Grey Wagtail at Worlingham Marshes, 14 January. Over-wintering warblers included a Blackcap in a garden at South Lopham, 17 January and a Chiffchaff at North Cove SWT reserve, 11 January. A Bearded Tit was noted at Lopham Fen, 11 January and two Stonechats at Oulton Marshes, 13 January, with Cetti’s Warblers recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Somerleyton Marshes, 13 January, Worlingham Marshes (three), 14 January and Carlton Marshes, 15 January. Kingfishers were seen at Gillingham Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 11 January, Carlton Marshes and Somerleyton Staithe, 13 January and Beccles Quay, 17 January.
Waders included three Green Sandpipers at Bungay, 11 January, two Avocets, 55 Curlews and ten Redshanks at Burgh Castle, 13 January, 2500 Lapwings and 25 Redshanks at Carlton Marshes, 15 January and four Woodcocks at Waveney Forest, 17 January.
