WBC Sightings

11 to 17 May 2014

A ringtail Montagu’s Harrier drifted high east over Carlton Marshes shortly after midday on 12 May. Red Kites were seen at Ashby, Carlton Marshes and Somerleyton, 17 May and a Hobby at St Olaves, 11 May, while three Barn Owls were noted at Carlton Marshes, 13 May.

The wader highlight was three Wood Sandpipers at Carlton Marshes, 17 May. Carlton Marshes also hosted two Redshanks, 15 May and one Dunlin and 40 Golden Plovers (flew north-east), 17 May. Waders at Burgh Castle included four Whimbrels, 14 Bar-tailed Godwits and ten Curlews, 12 May and two Avocets and 18 Redshanks, 17 May, while five Whimbrels were also present at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 13 May. Little Egrets were seen at Beccles Marshes, 13 May and Carlton Marshes (five), 17 May.

Migrant passerines included Whinchats at Castle Marsh (three) and Carlton Marshes (two), 13 May and Wheatears at Carlton Marshes (three) and Castle Marsh, 13 May. Turtle Doves were recorded at Belton Common (three), 12 May and Withersdale Street, 15 May. A Bearded Tit was noted at Burgh Castle, 16 May and a Kingfisher at Carlton Marshes, 17 May, with Cetti’s Warblers at Beccles Marshes (four), 13 May and Burgh Castle (two), 16 May.

Finally, a male Mandarin circled Carlton Marshes in the evening of 17 May.
