WBC Sightings

12 to 18 October 2014

A Great White Egret (most likely the same individual) was seen at Carlton Marshes and Herringfleet Marshes, 14 October and Haddiscoe Island, 18 October. Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (three) and Redenhall, 12 October, Burgh Castle (four), Redgrave Fen and Herringfleet Marshes, 14 October and Haddiscoe Island (20), 18 October.

Bearded Tits were much in evidence with records from Carlton Marshes (11), Oulton Marshes (two) and Fritton Marshes, 12 October, Lopham Fen (12) and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 14 October and Somerleyton Marshes (three), 15 October. Stonechats were noted at Fritton Marshes (two) and Belton Marshes, 12 October, a Grey Wagtail was seen at Barsham Marshes, 15 October, a Kingfisher at Somerleyton, 15 October and Cetti’s Warbler were recorded at Oulton Marshes (three) and Beccles Marshes, 12 October, Herringfleet Marshes (three) and Burgh Castle, 14 October and Blundeston Marshes, 15 October.

Waders at Burgh Castle on 14 October included a late Common Sandpiper, two Avocets, 25 Curlews and two Redshanks, while elsewhere Green Sandpipers were present at Flixton GP (two) and Lopham Fen, 12 October, a Curlew was seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 14 October and a Jack Snipe at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 15 October.

Raptor highlights included a Merlin at Barsham Marshes, 12 October, a ringtail Hen Harrier at Flixton (near Lowestoft), 15 October and a Peregrine at Haddiscoe Island, 17 October. Marsh Harriers were noted at Haddiscoe Island (six) and Beccles Marshes, 12 October, Herringfleet Marshes, 14 October and Somerleyton Marshes (two), 15 October and counts of Buzzards including four at Oulton Marshes and three at Haddiscoe Island, 12 October. Short-eared Owls were seen at Haddiscoe Island, 12 October and nearby Waveney Forest, Fritton (five), 18 October, with Barn Owls at Gillingham Marshes, 12 October, Burgh Castle, 14 October and Waveney Forest (two), 18 October.

Flocks of 700 Pink-footed Geese were seen at Carlton Marshes and St Olaves, 18 October, while a flock of 125 Greylag Geese flew north over Burgh Castle, 14 October.
