WBC Sightings

12 to 18 January 2014

The female Parrot Crossbill was seen with the flock of 20 Common Crossbills at Waveney Forest, Fritton until 14 January, while a Siberian Chiffchaff was present at Oulton Marshes, 14 January. Other notable passerines included a Chiffchaff at Waveney Forest and two Bramblings at North Cove SWT reserve, 12 January, two Bearded Tits at Waveney Forest and three Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes, 14 January, and a Mealy Redpoll and five Lesser Redpolls at North Cove SWT reserve, 18 January.

The long-staying Glossy Ibis was present at Oulton Marshes throughout the week. A Bittern flew along the river opposite Waveney Forest, 12 January, and Little Egrets were noted at Redgrave Fen and Haddiscoe Island (three), 14 January and Oulton Marshes (three), 17 January.

The two wintering Rough-legged Buzzards remained at Haddiscoe Island all week and were joined by a Peregrine, 13 January, a male and a ringtail Hen Harrier and ten Marsh Harriers, 16 January and a Red Kite, 17 January. A Short-eared Owl was seen at Haddiscoe Island, 12 and 13 January, while Barn Owls were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (four), 13 January, Oulton Marshes, 14 January and Gillingham Marshes, 15 January.

A redhead Goldeneye was present at Broome GP, 17 January and five Bewick’s Swans were seen at Aldeby shooting lakes, 18 January. Finally, a Woodcock was noted at Waveney Forest, 12 January.
