WBC Sightings

15 to 21 April 2018

The American Bittern was present at Carlton Marshes throughout the week. A Great White Egret flew north-east over Carlton Marshes, 19 April, a Crane flew west over Carlton Marshes, 20 April and a Little Egret was noted at Lopham Fen, 15 April.

An Osprey flew over Carlton Marshes, 19 April. The first Hobbies of the year were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 15 April and Oulton Marshes and Lopham Fen, 20 April. A male Hen Harrier flew over Carlton Marshes, 15 April and Red Kites were noted at Carlton and Oulton Marshes and five Buzzards at Belton, 18 April. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton Marshes, 21 April and Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes (three), 15 April, St James South Elmham (two), 16 April and Oulton Marshes, 21 April.

A male Redstart was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 15 April, a Blue-headed Wagtail at Carlton Marshes, 18 April and Ring Ouzels at Thorpe Marshes, Haddiscoe, 19 April and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 21 April. A Wheatear was present at Carlton Marshes, 15 April, five Yellow Wagtails at Carlton Marshes, 16 April and a Firecrest at Oulton Marshes, 21 April. The first Reed Warbler (Lopham Fen, 20 April) and Whitethroat (Carlton Marshes, 20 April) of the year were recorded during the week. Grasshopper Warblers were recorded at Oulton Marshes, 16 April, Carlton Marshes (four), 19 April and Lopham Fen, 20 April and Cuckoos at Carlton Marshes, 17 April, Lopham Fen, 18 April, Oulton Marshes, Redgrave Fen and Worlingham Marshes, 20 April and Castle Marsh and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 April. A Bearded Tit was noted at Aldeby, 15 April and a Lesser Redpoll at Lopham Fen, 16 April, while Cetti’s Warblers were recorded at Carlton Marshes (eight) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 April and Kingfishers at Worlingham Marshes, 15 April and Carlton Marshes and Redgrave Fen, 20 April.

A Garganey was present at Redgrave Fen, 20 and 21 April. The first Common Tern of year was noted at Carlton/Oulton Marshes, 15 April and two Mediterranean Gulls were seen at Carlton Marshes, 21 April.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included 40 Snipe, 15 April, two Whimbrel, 16 April, six Ruff, 18 April, a Dunlin, 20 April and eight Avocets, a Little Ringed Plover, two Greenshanks, four Black-tailed Godwits, a Curlew and ten Redshanks, 21 April, with eight Whimbrel noted at Castle Marsh, 21 April.
