WBC Sightings

18 to 24 January 2015

Three Scaup at Beccles Quay, 22 January, were an excellent find by a club member, with two present until the end of the week. Two Tundra Bean Goose were seen at Flixton Marshes (near Lowestoft), 18 January and 600 Pink-footed Geese flew over Somerleyton Marshes the following day. The same group of eight Whooper Swans probably accounted for records from Aldeby shooting lakes, 18 January, Flixton Marshes, 19 and 21 January and Haddiscoe Marshes, 24 January, while Bewick’s Swans were seen at Oulton Marshes (nine), Castle Marsh, North Cove (seven) and Carlton Marshes (four), 18 January.

A first-winter Glaucous Gull was present at Carlton Marshes, 18 and 19 January, while two Caspian Gulls (adult and first-winter) were reported from Aldeby landfill site, 23 January.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Peregrine, six Marsh Harriers, three Buzzards, two Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl, 20 January and a Rough-legged Buzzard, 23 January. Elsewhere, a Merlin was seen at Beccles Marshes and a ringtail Hen Harrier at Oulton Marshes, 24 January, with Marsh Harriers noted at Carlton Marshes (two), 21 January, Barsham Marshes (two) and Gillingham Marshes, 22 January, Beccles Marshes, 23 January and Burgh Castle, 24 January. Seven Buzzards were seen in the air together at Beccles, 22 January, with three also at Castle Marshes, 23 January, while two Barn Owls were recorded at Beccles Marshes, 24 January.

Over-wintering warblers included a female Blackcap in a garden at Barnby, 19 and 20 January and a Chiffchaff along Marsh Lane, Flixton, 22 January. Other notable passerines included a Water Pipit at Castle Marsh, 24 January, a Lesser Redpoll at Redgrave Fen, 19 January and a Cetti’s Warbler at Barsham Marshes and two Stonechats at Oulton Marshes, 18 January. Bearded Tits were noted at Lopham Fen, 18 January and Burgh Castle (two) and Castle Marsh (two), 24 January, Grey Wagtails at Ashby, 20 January and Beccles Quay, 24 January and Kingfishers at Beccles and Lopham Fen, 18 January and Flixton Marshes, 21 January.

Waders at Carlton Marshes on 18 January included a Green Sandpiper, four Black-tailed Godwits and three Dunlin, with further Green Sandpipers present at Barsham Marshes, 19 January and Outney Common, Bungay, 20 January. Six Avocets, two Black-tailed Godwits, 35 Curlews, 17 Dunlin and 30 Redshanks were seen at Burgh Castle, two Ruff at Haddiscoe Marshes and seven Black-tailed Godwits at Somerleyton Marshes, 24 January. Finally, Little Egrets were reported from Lopham Fen, 18 January, Beccles Quay, 20 January and Burgh Castle, 24 January.
