WBC Sightings

18 to 24 February 2018

The long-staying Rough-legged Buzzard at Haddiscoe Island was seen regularly through the week. Other raptors at Haddiscoe Island included five Short-eared Owls and two Barn Owls, 18 February and a Merlin and seven Marsh Harriers, 24 February. Elsewhere, a Peregrine was seen at Burgh Castle, 18 February, Marsh Harriers at Burgh Castle and Carlton Marshes, 18 February and Barn Owls at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 19 February and Carlton Marshes, 22 February.

A Chiffchaff was recorded at Carlton Marshes and a Grey Wagtail at Beccles, 18 February and a Water Pipit at Carlton Marshes, 22 February. Lesser Redpolls were noted at North Cove SWT reserve (six) and Carlton Marshes, 18 February and Lopham Fen (two) and Oulton Marshes, 24 February; Stonechats at Oulton Marshes (two) and Carlton Marshes, 18 February; Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes (three) and Fritton Marshes (three), 18 February; Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes (three) and Fritton Marshes, 18 February and Kingfishers at Carlton and Oulton Marshes and Fritton Marshes, 18 February.

A count of 389 Wigeon was made at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 18 February, while two Pintail were present at Carlton Marshes, 18 February and 190 Teal were recorded at the same site, 24 February. Six Pink-footed Geese were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 23 February.

Waders included a Ruff at Carlton Marshes, 18 February and a Redshank at the same site 21 February. A count of 383 Snipe was made at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 18 February and Woodcock were noted at Waveney Forest, Fritton (three), 23 February and Blundeston Marshes, Carlton Marshes, 24 February.

Finally, Little Egrets were noted at Carlton and Oulton Marshes (two), Haddiscoe Island (two) and Castle Marsh, 18 February and Redgrave Fen, 19 February.
