WBC Sightings

18 to 24 October 2015

A Great Grey Shrike was present at Barnby Marshes, 24 October. A Black Redstart was seen along Field View Gardens, Beccles, 18 October; a Tree Sparrow at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 October; a Nuthatch at St James South Elmham, 23 October and a Water Pipit and two Stonechats at Carlton Marshes and a Grey Wagtail at North Cove SWT reserve, 24 October. Lesser Redpolls were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 October and Carlton Marshes (five), 24 October; Chiffchaffs at Diss Mere, 18 October, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 October and Carlton Marshes (two), 24 October; Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes (three), 20 October and Carlton Marshes (five), 24 October; Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen (seven), 19 October and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 20 October and Kingfishers at Carlton Marshes and Lopham Fen, 18 October. High counts of Starlings included 1000 at Carlton Marshes, 19 October and 4000 at Herringfleet Marshes, 20 October.

A Long-eared Owl was hunting at dusk at Carlton Marshes, 23 October, while Short-eared Owls were seen at Carlton Marshes, 18 October and Haddiscoe Island (two), 22 October and Barn Owls at Haddiscoe Island, 22 October, Oulton Marshes, 23 October and Carlton Marshes (four), 24 October. Hen Harriers were recorded at Barnby Marshes (male) and Haddiscoe Island (male), 23 October and Carlton Marshes (ringtail) and Oulton Marshes (male), 24 October and Marsh Harriers at Lopham Fen, 18 October, Beccles Marshes and Herringfleet Marshes, 20 October, Haddiscoe Island (three), 23 October and Carlton Marshes (four) and Somerleyton Marshes, 24 October.

Two Spoonbills were seen at Carlton Marshes, 23 and 24 October. A Bittern flew over Castle Marsh, North Cove, 19 October and Little Egrets were recorded at Redgrave Fen (two), 18 October, Herringfleet Marshes, 20 October, Haddiscoe Island, 22 October, Oulton Marshes, 23 October and Carlton Marshes (three), 24 October.

Waders at Burgh Castle on 24 October included a Spotted Redshank, 225 Black-tailed Godwits, ten Avocets, 20 Curlews, seven Dunlins and ten Common Redshanks.

Pink-footed Geese were noted at St Olaves (300), 18 October, Haddiscoe Island (80), 22 October and Carlton Marshes (1000), 24 October and 120 Barnacle Geese flew north over Bungay, 19 October.
