WBC Sightings

19 to 25 April 2015

Wader passage gained momentum with Whimbrel noted at Burgh Castle Flats, 19 April, Beccles Marshes (15) and Castle Marsh, North Cove (two), 22 April and Carlton Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 25 April. Other waders recorded at Burgh Castle Flats included three Spotted Redshanks, 100 Black-tailed Godwits, 40 Curlews and 80 Redshanks, 19 April and 30 Avocets and 180 Dunlin, 25 April. A Black-tailed Godwit, a Little Ringed Plover and a Redshank were present at Carlton Marshes, 24 April, with two further Redshanks at Herringfleet Marshes, 21 April. Green Sandpipers were noted at Oulton Marshes, 21 April, St James South Elmham, 23 April and Flixton GP (two), Carlton Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 25 April, with two Common Sandpipers also at Flixton GP, 25 April.

Notable passerine migrants included a White Wagtail at Carlton Marshes, 24 April and a Ring Ouzel and a Wheatear at Flixton GP the following day. The first Yellow Wagtail (two at Burgh Castle, 19 April), Reed Warbler (Oulton Marshes, 20 April), Nightingale (Barsham, 21 April), Swift (Beccles, 23 April) and Lesser Whitethroat (Carlton Marshes, 24 April) were all recorded during the week. Further Yellow Wagtails were present at Carlton Marshes (five), Flixton GP (two) and Oulton Marshes, 25 April and a Grey Wagtail was seen at Diss Mere, 19 April. Cetti’s Warbler were noted at Burgh Castle, 19 April, Oulton Marshes (five) and Herringfleet Marshes, 21 April and Outney Common, Bungay and Geldeston, 25 April and Kingfishers at Redgrave Fen, 19 April, Beccles Marshes, 20 April and Outney Common, 25 April.

A pair of Garganey and a pair of Mandarin were present at Oulton Marshes, 25 April. The first Common Tern of the year was recorded at Weybread GP, 19 April and two Mediterranean Gulls were seen at Flixton (near Bungay), 25 April. Little Egrets were noted at Redgrave Fen, 21 April, Herringfleet (two), 22 April and Outney Common and Carlton Marshes, 25 April.

A Red Kite drifted southeast over Beccles, 21 April and three Buzzards were noted at Carlton Marshes, 24 April. Short-eared Owls were seen at Oulton Marshes, 19 April, Beccles Quay, 22 April and Carlton Marshes, 24 April, with Barn Owls reported from Belton Marshes, Blundeston, Burgh Castle and Lopham Fen, 19 April, Oulton Marshes, 21 April, Herringfleet, 22 April and Carlton Marshes, 25 April.
