WBC Sightings

19 to 25 January 2014

The two long-staying Rough-legged Buzzards at Haddiscoe Island were present all week. Other raptors included Peregrines at Carlton Marshes, 24 January and Belton Marshes and Haddiscoe Island the following day, a male Hen Harrier at Carlton Marshes, 19 January and Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes, 19 January, Oulton Marshes, 20 January and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 22 January. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 19 January, while Barn Owls were noted at Carlton Marshes and Geldeston Marshes, 19 January, Oulton Marshes, 20 January and Castle Marsh (two), 22 January.

Two Siberian Chiffchaffs were present at Oulton Marshes from 23 to 25 January. The finch flock at North Cove SWT reserve on 22 January included two Mealy Redpolls, 70 Lesser Redpolls and 20 Siskins and five Lesser Redpolls were seen at Fisher Row, Oulton, 25 January. Other notable passerines included two Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes, 19 January, Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes, 20 January and Castle Marsh, 22 January, a Water Pipit at Castle Marsh, 22 January and a Black Redstart around the boatyards at St Olaves, 24 January.

The long-staying Glossy Ibis at Oulton Marshes remained throughout the week, while Little Egrets were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two), 19 January and Haddiscoe Island (two), 25 January. Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Redshank, 19 January and a Green Sandpiper, 24 January. Finally, 22 Bewick’s Swans flew north-west over Oulton Marshes, 20 January.
