WBC Sightings

2 to 8 April 2017

A Raven flew north-west over Carlton Marshes early afternoon on 7 April. The first Grasshopper Warbler (4 April) and Yellow Wagtail (6 April) of the year were also recorded at Carlton Marshes during the week and other notable passerines at this SWT reserve included 19 Cetti’s Warblers, 2 April, a Brambling, 3 April, four Stonechats, 6 April and a White Wagtail and seven Water Pipits, 8 April. Elsewhere, a flock of 21 Waxwings was seen along Garden Lane, Worlingham, 2 and 3 April and nearby at Worlingham Marshes a Grey Wagtail was noted on 2 April. A Stonechat was recorded at Oulton Marshes, 4 April, Bearded Tits at Burgh St Peter (two) and Lopham Fen, 2 April and Cetti’s Warblers at Somerleyton Marshes (two), 2 April, Oulton Marshes (six), 4 April, Beccles Marshes, 6 April and Burgh St Peter and Lopham Fen, 8 April.

An Osprey flew north over Broome, 3 April. Red Kites were seen at Lopham Fen, 2 April, Carlton Marshes and Diss, 4 April and Beccles Common, 6 April and Peregrines at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 2 April and Carlton Marshes, 4 April, while seven Buzzards were noted at Carlton Marshes, 2 April, with seven also recorded at Redenhall, 4 April. Short-eared Owls were reported at Carlton Marshes (three), 2 April and Burgh Castle, 7 April, with a Barn Owl also seen at Carlton Marshes, 2 April.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included an Avocet, a Ruff and four Redshanks, 2 April and a Jack Snipe, a Black-tailed Godwit and three Dunlin, 8 April. Finally, Little Egrets were reported from Redenhall, 4 April and Carlton Marshes (five), 6 April.
