WBC Sightings

2 to 8 March 2014

Eight Parrot Crossbills and three Common Crossbills were reported at Waveney Forest, 2 March. Two singing Chiffchaffs at North Cove, 8 March and singing Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes, 2 March and Beccles Marshes and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 4 March were a welcome sign of spring. A Grey Wagtail and a Kingfisher were noted at Barsham Marshes, 2 March, while two Water Pipits were seen at Haddiscoe Island, 4 and 6 March.

A Glossy Ibis remained at Oulton Marshes throughout the week, while a Spoonbill was seen at dusk at Burgh Castle, 2 March and Little Egrets were noted at Redgrave Fen, 3 March, Castle Marsh, 4 March and Carlton Marshes (six), 6 March.

A Rough-legged Buzzard was seen almost daily at Haddiscoe Island, with two on 6 and 8 March. Other raptors included a Merlin at Haddiscoe Island, 2 and 5 March, a male Hen Harrier at Oulton Marshes, 7 March and a ringtail Hen Harrier at Haddiscoe Island, 5 and 6 March and two Peregrines at Haddiscoe Island, 4 and 6 March. Two Short-eared Owls were hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 4 March, while Barn Owls were reported from Beccles Marshes and Castle Marsh, 4 March and Haddiscoe Island (two), 5 March. 

Seven Bewick’s Swans flew east over Beccles, 4 March, a Woodcock was recorded at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 4 March, a Redshank was present at Carlton Marshes, 6 March and a Mediterranean Gull was seen at Ashby, 8 March.
