WBC Sightings

20 to 26 January 2013

A Great White Egret was seen by the river at Barnby Marshes, 24 January. When disturbed it flew over to Short Dam Level, Burgh St Peter, before heading towards Castle Marsh, North Cove. Four Little Egrets were present at Weybread GP, 24 January, and a Bittern was noted in flight by the river at Carlton Marshes, 21 January.

A family party of six Whooper Swans was present in a field along Waddling Lane, Blundeston, 25 and 26 January. The Ross’ Goose of unknown origin flew north-west along Haddiscoe New Cut accompanied by six Barnacle Geese and 20 Pink-footed Geese, 20 January, while 600 Pink-footed Geese were seen at Blundeston, 25 January, and 800 flew north over Warren Carr, Somerleyton the following day. A redhead Goosander was present at Weybread GP, 20 January, while a male flew north along the river at Fritton the following day and one was on the river at Burgh Castle, 25 January.

A flock of 15 Waxwings were seen along St Mary’s Road, Beccles, 20 January, and one was present nearby along Rowan Way, Worlingham the following day. Other unusual garden visits included a male Blackcap in Cherrywood, Harleston, 22 January, and a Brambling along Ellough Road, Beccles, 23 January. Bearded Tits were recorded at Barsham Marshes (two), 20 January, and Castle Marsh, 24 January, a Grey Wagtail was present at Weybread Sewage Works, 24 January, and three Lesser Redpolls were seen at Weybread GP, 26 January. A singing Cetti’s Warbler was noted at Carlton Marshes, 26 January, while Kingfishers were noted at Weybread GP (five), 20 January, and Beccles Marshes, 22 January.

The long-staying Rough-legged Buzzard remained at Haddiscoe Island all week. A Merlin was seen at Carlton Marshes, 20 January, while sightings of Marsh Harriers included one at Beccles Marshes, 22 January, and two at Carlton Marshes and one at Castle Marsh, 24 January. Three Short-eared Owls were present at Haddiscoe Island, 21 January, while Barn Owls were reported from Beccles Marshes, 22 January, Carlton Marshes (two), Castle Marsh (two) and Pound Hill, Harleston, 24 January, Weybread GP (two) and Marsh Lane, Flixton, 25 January, and Waddling Lane, Blundeston, 26 January.

A Green Sandpiper was seen at Outney Common, Bungay, 21 January, and two Redshanks were present at Carlton Marshes, 25 January. Finally, Woodcock were noted at Carlton Marshes (two) and Weybread GP, 20 January, Beccles Common (four), 21 January, and Waddling Lane, Blundeston, 26 January.
