WBC Sightings

21 to 27 January 2018

A group of eight Taiga Bean Geese was present at Haddiscoe Island, 23 January, while 70 Pink-footed Geese flew north over St Olaves, 21 January. Two Bewick’s Swans were noted at Carlton Marshes, 26 January and two escaped Black Swans at Gillingham Marshes, 23 January. A combined count of 310 Wigeon was made at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 21 January.

The Rough-legged Buzzard was seen at Haddiscoe Island regularly throughout the week and roosted at Waveney Forest, Fritton. Other raptors noted at Haddiscoe Island during the week included a Peregrine and three Barn Owls, 21 January and five Buzzards and two Short-eared Owls, 22 January. Elsewhere, a Red Kite was seen at Carlton Marshes, 22 January, Marsh Harriers were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (four), 21 January, Lopham Fen (two), 25 January, Carlton Marshes (four), 26 January and Blundeston, 27 January and Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes, 21 January and Lopham Fen (two) and Herringfleet Marshes, 25 January.

Waders at Haddiscoe Island included two Green Sandpipers and a Redshank, 21 January and a Curlew, 22 January. Elsewhere, a Woodcock was seen at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 22 January and a Woodcock and 11 Snipe were noted at Roydon Fen and a flock of 140 Golden Plovers was present at Carlton Marshes, 26 January. A combined count of 485 Snipe was made at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 21 January. Little Egrets were noted at Oulton Marshes (two) and Blundeston Marshes, 21 January, Haddiscoe Island (six) and Redgrave Fen, 22 January and Carlton Marshes, 26 January.

A Grey Wagtail was seen at Beccles, 21 January and a Nuthatch at Lopham Fen, 26 January. Water Pipits were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (three), 21 January and Carlton Marshes, 26 January; Lesser Redpolls at Carlton Marshes (two), 26 January and Lopham Fen (four), 27 January; Stonechats at Lopham Fen, 25 January and Carlton Marshes, 26 January; Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen (four) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 January and Carlton Marshes (six), 26 January; Cetti’s Warblers at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 January, Herringfleet Marshes and Lopham Fen, 25 January and Carlton Marshes (seven), 26 January and Kingfishers at Carlton Marshes, 26 January and Belton Marshes, 27 January. A count of 120 Skylarks was made at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 21 January.
