WBC Sightings

23 to 29 September 2018

The regular Cattle Egret at Carlton Marshes was present throughout the week, while 13 Little Egrets were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 29 September.

Raptors recorded at Haddiscoe Island on 29 September included a Merlin, a Peregrine, 16 Marsh Harriers, six Buzzards, a Short-eared Owl and three Barn Owls. Elsewhere, Hobbies were recorded at Herringfleet (two), 26 September and Somerleyton, 29 September, Marsh Harriers at Burgh Castle, 25 September, Carlton Marshes, 27 September, Herringfleet Marshes, 28 September and Castle Marsh, North Cove and Somerleyton, 29 September and five Buzzards were seen at Diss, 29 September. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton Marshes, 26 September and two Barn Owls were noted at the same site on 23 September.

Passerines recorded at Haddiscoe Island on 29 September included a Lapland Bunting, a Wheatear, a Yellow Wagtail, a White Wagtail, a Water Pipit, three Rock Pipits, a Brambling, 67 Bearded Tits, 183 Reed Buntings, 169 Skylarks, four Reed Warblers, two Cetti’s Warblers and nine Stonechats. A late Reed Warbler was also noted at Carlton Marshes on 29 September, along with four Cetti’s Warblers and five Stonechats. A Stonechat and seven Bearded Tits were seen at Castle Marsh and two Grey Wagtails at Worlingham, 29 September. Kingfishers were reported from Herringfleet Marshes, 28 September and Haddiscoe Island, 29 September.

Waders recorded at Haddiscoe Island on 29 September included a Greenshank, two Ruff, eight Black-tailed Godwits, two Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, 200 Curlews, 22 Snipe, a Dunlin and nine Redshanks, while waders at Carlton Marshes included three Ruff and two Black-tailed Godwits, 23 September and a Dunlin, 29 September. Two Bar-tailed Godwits were present at Burgh Castle Flats, 25 September.

Finally, a count of 195 Teal was made at Haddiscoe Island, 29 September.
