The American Bittern was present at Carlton Marshes throughout the week and began ‘singing’ from 2 May onwards. A Glossy Ibis flew south over Breydon Water and landed in horse paddocks along Back Lane, Burgh Castle, 4 May and a Little Egret was noted at Carlton Marshes, 29 April.
A Pied Flycatcher was present along Fisher Row, Oulton, 4 May, eight Crossbills were seen at Fritton Lake, 4 May and Wheatears were noted at Barnby Marshes, 1 May and Carlton Marshes (three), 3 May. The first Garden Warbler of the year was recorded at Carlton Marshes, 2 May. A Grey Wagtail was seen at Bungay, 5 May and two Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen, 2 May. Yellow Wagtails were noted at Burgh Castle (20), 29 April and Carlton Marshes (four), 2 May; Cuckoos at Castle Marsh, North Cove (two), 1 May, Lopham Fen and Oulton Marshes, 2 May, Carlton Marshes (four), 4 May and Beccles Marshes (three) and St Olaves, 5 May; Grasshopper Warblers at Oulton Marshes (two), Carlton Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen, 2 May and Beccles Marshes, 5 May; Cetti’s Warblers at Lopham Fen, 29 April, Oulton Marshes, 2 May, Carlton Marshes (two), 3 May and Beccles Marshes, 5 May and Kingfishers at Carlton Marshes, 29 April, Beccles Marshes, 4 May and Lopham Fen, 5 May.
Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Green Sandpiper, a Black-tailed Godwit and five Redshanks, 29 April, a Common Sandpiper, 1 May, ten Avocets, 2 May, ten Snipe, 3 May, two Greenshanks, 4 May and five Whimbrel, 5 May, while at Burgh Castle Flats on 29 April waders included two Spotted Redshanks, three Greenshanks, four Avocets and 60 Black-tailed Godwits. A count of 48 Whimbrel was made at Castle Marsh, 3 May.
Single Red Kites were recorded at Wheatacre, 4 May and Carlton Marshes, 5 May, while Hobbies were noted at Castle Marsh (four) and Thorpe Marshes, Haddiscoe (two), 3 May, Oulton Marshes, 4 May and Lopham Fen (five) and Carlton Marshes (three), 5 May. An impressive 19 Buzzards were seen in the air together at Carlton Marshes, 5 May. Finally, Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes (three) and Lopham Fen, 2 May, Beccles Marshes, 4 May and Bungay, 5 May.
