It was a good week for wildfowl, with three Tundra Bean Geese present at Churchfarm Marshes, Burgh Castle, 8 January, and White-fronted Geese recorded at Castle Marsh, North Cove (15), 4 January, Burgh Castle and Oulton Marshes, 6 January, Pink-footed Geese at Oulton Marshes (1000), 5 January and St Olaves (350), 9 January and two Bewick’s Swans at Gillingham Marshes, 5 January.
A Firecrest was seen in a garden at Barnby, 7 January and a Nuthatch in a garden at Ditchingham, 4 January. A Bearded Tit was noted at Burgh Castle, 9 January and Grey Wagtails were recorded at Beccles Quay, 4 January and Oulton Marshes, 9 January and Stonechats at Castle Marsh (three), 4 January and Oulton Marshes (two), 8 January. A Kingfisher was seen at Beccles Marshes, 5 January.
A male Hen Harrier was present at Oulton Marshes, 6 January, while Marsh Harriers were seen at Beccles Marshes, 4 January, Ashby, 5 January and Carlton Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 9 January. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Oulton Marshes, 5 January and Barn Owls were reported from Oulton Marshes, 5 January and Beccles Marshes, 6 January.
Finally, 28 Avocets and 165 Redshanks were recorded at Burgh Castle Flats, 9 January, Little Egrets were present at Castle Marsh, 4 January and Carlton Marshes (two), 5 January and a Mediterranean Gull was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 5 January.
