WBC Sightings

3 to 9 May 2015

Raptor highlights were an Osprey, which flew south-west over Burgh Castle, 7 May and a first-summer Rough-legged Buzzard, which flew south over Carlton Marshes, 9 May. Hobbies were seen at Beccles Marshes (two), 3 May, Lopham Fen (eight), 4 May, Worlingham, 6 May, Oulton Marshes (two), 8 May and Somerleyton and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 9 May, while sightings of Buzzards included three at Beccles Marshes, 7 May and five at Carlton Marshes the following day.

Three Wood Sandpipers were present at Oulton Marshes, 4 May, while Common Sandpipers were seen at Oulton Marshes (three) and Redgrave Fen, 4 May and Beccles Marshes, 7 May. Whimbrel were recorded at Beccles Marshes (26), 4 May, Carlton Marshes (two), 5 May and Burgh Castle Flats (six), 9 May. Carlton Marshes also hosted four Dunlin and two Redshanks, 4 May and a Greenshank and a Ringed Plover, 7 May, while other waders recorded at Burgh Castle Flats on 9 May included six Avocets, two Greenshanks and 72 Black-tailed Godwits. Little Egrets were reported from Wheatacre Marshes, 4 May and Carlton Marshes (three), 8 May.

Three Turtle Doves were seen at Belton Common, 3 May and Cuckoos were reported from Redgrave Fen (two) and Dunburgh, 3 May, Carlton Marshes, Oulton Marshes and St Olaves, 4 May and Somerleyton, 9 May. A Grasshopper Warbler was heard at Carlton Marshes, 4 May, while Cetti’s Warbler were noted at Blundeston Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 4 May, Beccles Marshes (three), 7 May, Carlton Marshes, 8 May and Somerleyton (three) and Burgh Castle (two), 9 May.

Finally, a drake Mandarin was present at Fritton Lake, 7 May.
