WBC Sightings

30 April to 6 May 2017

There was an impressive movement of terns on 30 April, with seven Black Terns and a Little Tern recorded at Weybread GP, while at Carlton Marshes, two Little Terns were seen and 35 Arctic Terns flew south-east early afternoon.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included two Wood Sandpipers, a Turnstone, two Greenshanks and four Ringed Plovers, 29 April, three Bar-tailed Godwits, two Little Ringed Plovers, a Common Sandpiper, six Dunlin and three Redshanks, 1 May, a Spotted Redshank and two Black-tailed Godwits, 2 May and an Avocet, 6 May. Two Bar-tailed Godwits, three Grey Plovers, five Ringed Plovers and a Whimbrel were seen at Flixton GP, a Bar-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, ten Whimbrels at Worlingham Marshes and three Common Sandpipers at Weybread GP, 30 April, 20 Whimbrels at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 2 May and an Avocet and a Redshank at Earsham GP, 3 May. A Redshank was noted at Oulton Marshes, 30 April, with a Common Sandpiper at the same site on 5 May.

Single Ospreys were seen at Earsham, 30 April and Carlton Marshes, 5 May, Hobbies at Burgh Castle, 30 April, Carlton Marshes, 1 May and Lopham Fen (five) and Herringfleet, 5 May and a Peregrine at Carlton Marshes, 5 May. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton Marshes, 2 May, while Barn Owls were reported from St James South Elmham, 30 April, Carlton Marshes, 3 May, North Cove, 5 May and Homersfield, 6 May.

Notable passerines recorded at Carlton Marshes included a male Blue-headed Wagtail (with a female present on 2 May), three Cuckoos and a Cetti’s Warbler, 30 April, seven Grasshopper Warblers, 1 May, a Stonechat, 2 May, two White Wagtails and four Yellow Wagtails, 3 May and two Ring Ouzels, 4 May. Nearby at Oulton Marshes passerines recorded on 30 April included a Yellow Wagtail, a Grasshopper Warbler, three Cuckoos, a Stonechat and a Cetti’s Warbler. Two Yellow Wagtails were present at Flixton GP, 30 April, two Wheatears at Haddiscoe Island, 1 May and two late Fieldfares at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 4 May. Cuckoos were noted at Lopham Fen and Redgrave Fen, 30 April, Flixton GP, 1 May, North Cove, 2 May, St James South Elmham, 4 May and Weybread GP, 6 May, Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen (two) and Redgrave Fen, 30 April and Kingfishers at Weybread GP, 30 April and Beccles, 1 May.

Finally, Carlton Marshes also hosted two Garganeys, 30 April and three Little Egrets, 5 May.
