WBC Sightings

7 to 13 May 2017

A male and a female Red-footed Falcon flew over Carlton Marshes late morning on 10 May. Other raptor highlights included a male Hen Harrier which flew east over Worlingham Marshes, 7 May, Red Kites at Carlton Marshes, 10 May and Belton, 13 May, Hobbies at Redgrave and Lopham Fen (six) and Outney Common, Bungay, 7 May, Carlton Marshes (two), 10 May, North Cove, 11 May and Oulton Marshes and St Olaves, 13 May and Peregrines at Carlton Marshes, 8 May and North Cove, 11 May. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton Marshes, 13 May and Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes (two) and Oulton Marshes, 13 May.

A Temminck’s Stint was present at Carlton Marshes, 9 and 10 May. Other waders at Carlton Marshes included nine Whimbrels, a Grey Plover, a Turnstone, a Green Sandpiper and a Redshank, 7 May, two Common Sandpipers, 8 May, a Spotted Redshank, 9 May, 17 Black-tailed Godwits, a Curlew and a Dunlin, 10 May, seven Ringed Plovers and two Greenshanks, 11 May, a Little Ringed Plover, 12 May and two Avocets, 13 May. Elsewhere, a Ringed Plover and a Common Sandpiper were present at Redgrave Fen, 7 May, four Greenshanks and two Redshanks at Burgh Castle and a Redshank at Beccles Marshes, 9 May, a Whimbrel at North Cove, 11 May and a Common Sandpiper at Oulton Marshes, 13 May.

Cranes were noted flying over Redgrave and Lopham Fen (three), 7 May and Carlton Marshes (three), 10 May, while Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (two), 7 May, Herringfleet Marshes, 8 May and Beccles Marshes, 9 May.

The first Spotted Flycatcher of the year was present at Carlton Marshes, 13 May. A Whinchat was seen at Carlton Marshes, 7 May and a male Blue-headed Wagtail at the same site on 13 May. Yellow Wagtails were recorded at Carlton Marshes (three), 7 May and Oulton Marshes, 11 May, with two Grey Wagtails at Weybread Mill, 13 May. Cuckoos were noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 8 May, Carlton Marshes (two) and St Olaves, 12 May and Oulton Marshes, 13 May, Grasshopper Warblers at Carlton Marshes (five), 9 May and Oulton Marshes, 13 May and Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes and Worlingham Marshes, 7 May, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 8 May, North Cove, 11 May and Oulton Marshes and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 13 May. Two Bearded Tits were seen at Oulton Marshes, 13 May.

Finally, a male Garganey was present at Carlton Marshes and a White-fronted Goose at Burgh Castle, 9 May.
