WBC Sightings

8 to 14 April 2018

The American Bittern was present throughout the week at Carlton Marshes. Two Cranes flew west over Carlton Marshes, 14 April, the Great White Egret at Oulton Marshes was present until 10 April and Little Egrets were noted at Outney Common, Bungay (three), 8 April and Carlton Marshes (three), 14 April.

A Whinchat was seen at Carlton Marshes, 13 April, with a Blue-headed Wagtail, a Tree Pipit and two Ring Ouzels noted at the same site the following day. The first Sand Martin (two, Carlton Marshes, 8 April); Sedge Warbler (Carlton Marshes, 8 April); Yellow Wagtail (three, Carlton Marshes, 9 April); Grasshopper Warbler (Carlton Marshes, 10 April, with another at Oulton Marshes, 14 April); House Martin (Carlton Marshes, 13 April); Wheatear (Carlton Marshes, 14 April, with another at Thorpe Marshes, Haddiscoe on the same day); Cuckoo (Carlton Marshes, 14 April) and Lesser Whitethroat (Oulton, 14 April) of the year were all recorded during the week. A Brambling was noted at Worlingham and two Grey Wagtails at Outney Common, 8 April. Lesser Redpolls were recorded at Lopham Fen, 13 April and Carlton Marshes (13), 14 April, Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (five), 10 April and Oulton Marshes (two) and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 14 April and Kingfishers at Outney Common (two) and Carlton Marshes, 8 April and Beccles Marshes, 14 April.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included two Ruff, 9 April, two Jack Snipe, two Avocets, a Greenshank, 22 (Common) Snipe and a Woodcock, 10 April, two Whimbrel, 12 April, 23 Black-tailed Godwits, four Dunlin and 12 Redshanks, 13 April and a Little Ringed Plover, 14 April. At nearby Oulton Marshes, 20 Snipe and a Redshank were noted on 14 April.

Notable raptors at Carlton Marshes included a male Hen Harrier, 12 April and a Red Kite and eight Buzzards, 14 April, while elsewhere Red Kites were noted at St Olaves, 10 April and Ditchingham, 13 April. Barn Owls were reported from Outney Common, 8 April, Carlton Marshes (three), 10 April, Lopham Fen, 13 April and Beccles Common and Oulton Marshes, 14 April.

Finally, two Little Gulls flew over Outney Common, 8 April.
