19 to 25 January 2020

The two first-winter Great Northern Divers were present at No.1 Pit, Weybread on 19 January, with one remaining the following day.

White-fronted Geese were seen at Somerleyton Marshes (two), 24 January and Carlton Marshes (two), 25 January and Pink-footed Geese at Blundeston (35), 19 January, Carlton Marshes, 22 January and Somerleyton Marshes (800), 24 January. A Brent Goose was present at Carlton Marshes throughout the week, with counts of 220 Greylag Geese and 150 Mute Swans at the same site on 25 January. Notable counts of ducks included 17 Pintail at Carlton Marshes, 250 Teal at Haddiscoe Island and 183 Teal at Herringfleet Marshes, 22 January.

Two Great White Egrets roosted at Carlton Marshes, 19 January, with one recorded on 21, 22, 24 and 25 January and one present at Haddiscoe Island, 19 January. Little Egrets were reported from Haddiscoe Island (three), 20 January, Weybread GP, 22 January, Somerleyton Marshes, 24 January and Carlton Marshes (26), 25 January and a Bittern was seen at Oulton Marshes, 25 January.

Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (11), 22 January and Carlton Marshes (five), 25 January; Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (two) and Haddiscoe Island, 19 January and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 22 January; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (five), 19 January, Lopham Fen, 20 January, Herringfleet Marshes (five), 22 January and Somerleyton Marshes, 24 January and Kingfishers at Carlton Marshes, 19 January and Weybread GP, 22 January. A Chiffchaff was seen at Carlton Marshes, 19 January and six Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes and a flock of 40 Siskins at nearby Herringfleet Hills, 22 January.

Six Buzzards were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 19 January and a Peregrine at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 January, while Marsh Harriers were seen at Haddiscoe Island (22) and Carlton Marshes (three), 19 January, Lopham Fen (two), 20 January, Herringfleet Marshes, 22 January and Somerleyton Marshes, 24 January. Hunting Short-eared Owls were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (seven), 19 January and Belton Marshes, 25 January and Barn Owls at Haddiscoe Island (two), Carlton Marshes, Lopham Fen and Withersdale Street, 19 January, Burgh Castle, 22 January and Belton Marshes, 25 January.

Notable waders at Carlton Marshes included a Greenshank and four Woodcock, 19 January, 800 Lapwings and 12 Snipe, 21 January and four Dunlin, 25 January. Elsewhere, a Redshank was seen at Burgh Castle, 22 January, 56 Snipe at Somerleyton Marshes, 24 January and a Greenshank and 53 Curlews, Belton Marshes and three Woodcock at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 January. Finally, an adult Yellow-legged Gull was noted at Carlton Marshes, 25 January.

 

12 to 18 January 2020

The two long-staying first-winter Great Northern Divers at No.1 Pit, Weybread were present throughout the week.

Notable wildfowl included 30 White-fronted Geese and 700 Pink-footed Geese at Haddiscoe Island, eight White-fronted Geese and 15 Pink-footed Geese at Carlton Marshes and 450 Pink-footed Geese at Oulton Marshes, 18 January. Two Pintail were also present at Carlton Marshes, 18 January.

Two Great White Egrets roosted at Carlton Marshes on 18 January, with one on 12 January, while one was also seen at Haddiscoe Island, 18 January. Little Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes (25), Homersfield, Outney Common, Bungay and Weybread GP, 12 January.

Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (ten), 14 January and Carlton Marshes (two), 18 January, Grey Wagtails at Homersfield, 12 January and Beccles, 14 January and Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (four), Oulton Marshes (two) and Blundeston Marshes, 18 January. A Kingfisher was noted at Weybread GP, 12 January, a Chiffchaff at Beccles, 14 January, a Cetti’s Warbler at Redgrave Fen, 15 January and two Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes, 18 January.

A Red Kite was seen at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 18 January, with Marsh Harriers reported from Lopham Fen, 15 January and Carlton Marshes (four), 18 January and Barn Owls from Beccles Marshes, 14 January, Lopham Fen, 15 January and Carlton Marshes, 18 January.

Finally, a Greenshank and three Redshanks were noted at Carlton Marshes, 18 January.

 

5 to 11 January 2020

Two first-winter Great Northern Divers were seen at No.1 Pit, Weybread from 7 to 11 January (and according to fishermen had been present since early December).

Passerine highlights included 16 Water Pipits and ten Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 January. Grey Wagtails were recorded at Worlingham Marshes (two) and Weybread GP, 11 January; Stonechats at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 January, Lopham Fen, 6 January, Castle Marsh, North Cove, 7 January and Somerleyton Marshes (two), 10 January and Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes (three), 5 January, Lopham Fen (two), 9 January and Carlton Marshes, 11 January.

Two Great White Egrets roosted at Carlton Marshes, 9 January, with one recorded on 5, 10 and 11 January and Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes (three), 5 January, Weybread GP, 9 January and Carlton Marshes (26), 10 January.

Marsh Harriers were seen at Herringfleet Marshes and Lopham Fen, 5 January, Castle Marsh (two), 7 January, Somerleyton Marshes, 10 January and Carlton Marshes (three) and Burgh Castle (two), 11 January and five Short-eared Owls were hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 8 January.

Pink-footed Geese were noted at Herringfleet Marshes (six), 5 January and Carlton Marshes, 11 January, with 100 Greylag Geese at Castle Marsh, 7 January. A Dunlin was seen at Carlton Marshes, 5 January and 200 Curlews at Burgh Castle, 11 January. Finally, an adult Yellow-legged Gull was recorded at Carlton Marshes, 11 January.

A Tundra Bean Goose was present at Oulton Marshes, 4 January. White-fronted Geese were seen at Oulton Marshes (38) and Carlton Marshes (20), 2 January and Herringfleet Marshes (ten), 4 January and Pink-footed Geese at Oulton Marshes (600), 30 December, Carlton Marshes (150), 1 January, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (300), 3 January and Herringfleet Marshes (350), 4 January. A Goosander flew over Carlton Marshes and three Pintail were seen at the same site on 2 January.

A Great White Egret roosted at Carlton Marshes throughout the week with other sightings at Burgh Castle and Haddiscoe Island, 29 December and Earsham GP, 1 January. Little Egrets were reported from Haddiscoe Island (two), 29 December, Herringfleet Marshes and Lopham Fen, 30 December and Carlton Marshes (25) and Earsham GP (three), 1 January.

A Peregrine was seen at Carlton Marshes, 2 January. Merlins were recorded at Haddiscoe Island, 1 January, Lopham Fen, 3 January; Marsh Harriers at Lopham Fen, 29 December, Carlton Marshes (seven) and Beccles Marshes (two), 1 January, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (four), 3 January and Herringfleet Marshes (five), 4 January; Short-eared Owls at Haddiscoe Island (four), 29 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 31 December and Barn Owls at Haddiscoe Island, 29 December, Carlton Marshes, 30 December, Lopham Fen, 1 January and Oulton Marshes, 4 January.

A male Blackcap was seen at Beccles, 29 December and 16 Water Pipits at Herringfleet Marshes, 2 January. Grey Wagtails were noted at Earsham Mill (two) and Beccles, 1 January; Bearded Tits at Haddiscoe Island (30) and Burgh Castle, 29 December, Herringfleet Marshes (15), 31 December and Carlton Marshes, 4 January; Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (four) and Haddiscoe Island (two), 29 December, Herringfleet Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen (three), 30 December and Oulton Marshes, 2 January; Chiffchaffs at Carlton Marshes, 1 January and Oulton Marshes, 4 January and Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes, 29 December, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 30 December and Lopham Fen, 1 January. A pre-roost count of 80 Pied Wagtails was made at Lopham Fen on 29 December.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included 500 Lapwings and a Redshank, 1 January and five Black-tailed Godwits, 2 January. A count of 203 Curlews was made at Burgh Castle, 29 December. Finally, single Woodcock were seen at Haddiscoe Island and Lopham Fen, 1 January.

 

22 to 28 December 2019

A Merlin was seen at Lopham Fen, 24 December and a Red Kite at Beccles, 26 December. Marsh Harriers were reported from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (six), 22 December, Somerleyton Marshes, 23 December, Lopham Fen, 24 December and Gillingham Marshes (three), 26 December and five Buzzards were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 December. Short-eared Owls were seen hunting at Haddiscoe Island (six), 22 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 25 December and Barn Owls at Haddiscoe Island (two), 22 December, Carlton Marshes, 27 December and Lopham Fen, 28 December.

Three White-fronted Geese were present at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe on 22 December and two Whooper Swans flew north-west over the same site on 27 December. Pink-footed Geese were seen at Somerleyton Marshes (1,500), 23 December and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (2,000), 27 December.

Great White Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes, 22, 25 and 27 December, Haddiscoe Island, 22 December, Burgh Castle, 23 December and Blundeston Marshes, 28 December, with Little Egrets reported from Carlton Marshes (22), 25 December and Somerleyton Marshes, 23 December.

A Water Pipit was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 December, four Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen, 24 December, a male Blackcap at Beccles, 25 December and a Chiffchaff at Carlton Marshes, 28 December. A pre-roost count of 200 Pied Wagtails was made at Lopham Fen on 24 December.

A Green Sandpiper was seen at Worlingham Marshes and 115 Black-tailed Godwits at Carlton Marshes, 27 December. Finally, single Woodcock were noted at Haddiscoe Marshes, 22 December and Lopham Fen, 28 December.

 

15 to 21 December 2019

A Waxwing was seen along Rectory Road, Carlton Colville from 16 to 19 December, increasing to three on 20 December and 31 on 21 December. Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (nine), 16 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 21 December; Stonechats at Carlton Marshes, 15 December and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 16 December; Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes, 15 December and Lopham Fen (five), 19 December; Chiffchaffs at Carlton Marshes (four) and Oulton Marshes (two), 15 December and Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (two), 15 December and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 16 December. A Kingfisher was noted at Carlton Marshes, 15 December.

Great White Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes, 15, 16 and 21 December, St Olaves, 15 December and Belton Marshes, 21 December, with Little Egrets at Herringfleet Marshes (four), 16 December and Carlton Marshes (19), 21 December.

A flock of 17 Whooper Swans flew over Carlton Marshes late afternoon on 19 December and two Pintail and 230 Wigeon were noted at the same site on 15 December.

A Merlin was reported from Belton Marshes, 21 December. Red Kites were noted at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 15 December and Ellingham, 21 December and Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes (four), 15 December and Lopham Fen, 19 December. Seven Short-eared Owls were hunting at Haddiscoe Island and a Barn Owl at Carlton Marshes, 15 December.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included three Dunlin and two Redshanks, 15 December, 1,500 Lapwings, 18 December and a Grey Plover, a Greenshank and 65 Black-tailed Godwits, 21 December.

 

8 to 14 December 2019

A Glossy Ibis was seen at Carlton Marshes, 12 December. Great White Egrets were recorded at Haddiscoe Island, 11 December and Carlton Marshes, 14 December and Little Egrets at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 12 December, Burgh Castle (two), 13 December and Carlton Marshes (14), 14 December.

Three Water Pipits were seen at Carlton Marshes, 12 December. Bearded Tits were noted at Lopham Fen (two), 8 December and Carlton Marshes (three), 14 December; Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen (two), 8 December and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 12 December; Chiffchaffs at Aldeby, 8 December and Carlton Marshes (three), 14 December and Cetti’s Warblers at Lopham Fen, 8 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 14 December. A pre-roost count of 25,000 Starlings was made at Lopham Fen on 8 December.

A Peregrine was seen at Carlton Marshes, 11 December and a Red Kite at Gillingham, 14 December, while Marsh Harriers were noted at Lopham Fen (two), 8 December, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 12 December, Burgh Castle, 13 December and Carlton Marshes (three), 14 December. Three Short-eared Owls were hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 11 December and a Barn Owl at Carlton Marshes, 12 December.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included 1,500 Lapwings and two Redshanks, 8 December, a Black-tailed Godwit, 11 December and a Greenshank and eight Dunlin, Carlton Marshes, 14 December, with 1,500 Golden Plovers at Lopham Fen, 8 December and 900 Lapwings, 25 Curlews, three Dunlin and ten Redshanks at Burgh Castle, 13 December.

Pink-footed Geese were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (300), 12 December, Oulton Marshes (2,400), 13 December. A count of 120 Teal was made at Burgh Castle, 13 December, while 200 Greylag Geese, five Pintail, 250 Wigeon and 200 Teal were noted at Carlton Marshes the following day.

 

1 to 7 December 2019

A first-winter Rough-legged Buzzard was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 December. A Merlin was recorded at Lopham Fen and seven Buzzards in the air together at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 December and two Peregrines at Carlton Marshes, 5 December. Marsh Harriers were reported from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (four) and Lopham Fen, 2 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 7 December. Four Short-eared Owls were hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 7 December, while Barn Owls were noted at Carlton Marshes, 1 December and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 December.

Great White Egrets were present at Carlton Marshes, 1 December and Haddiscoe Island, 2 December, while Little Egrets were recorded at Carlton Marshes (19) and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 1 December.

A Grey Wagtail was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe and a Kingfisher at Carlton/Oulton Marshes, 2 December, three Chiffchaffs at Carlton Marshes, 5 December and two Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen, 7 December. Stonechats were noted at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 1 December, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 2 December and Carlton Marshes (two), 7 December and Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes, 1 December and Lopham Fen, 7 December. There was a pre-roost gathering of 100 Pied Wagtails at Lopham Fen on 1 December and a similar gathering of 50,000 Starlings at the same site on the following day.

Pink-footed Geese were recorded at Carlton/Oulton Marshes (1200), 2 December and Blundeston/Flixton Marshes (500), 7 December. Also of note were 200 Wigeon and 150 Gadwall at Carlton Marshes, 5 December.

Finally, a count of 29 Snipe was made at Carlton/Oulton Marshes, 2 December.

 

24 to 30 November 2019

Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 November and Carlton Marshes, 26 November; Grey Wagtails at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 25 November, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 27 November and Beccles, 29 November; Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (five), 24 November, Herringfleet Marshes (three), 25 November, Lopham Fen (two), 26 November and Haddiscoe Island (three), 30 November; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (three), 24 November and Lopham Fen, 30 November and Chiffchaffs at Somerleyton, 25 November and Carlton Marshes (three), 30 November. A Kingfisher was seen at Carlton Marshes and three Bearded Tits and a pre-roost gathering of 20,500 Starlings at Lopham Fen on 30 November.

A Great White Egret was present at Haddiscoe Island, 30 November, while Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes (four), 25 November and Carlton Marshes (16) and Haddiscoe Island (six), 30 November.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Spotted Redshank and 40 Black-tailed Godwits, 24 November, 650 Lapwings, 26 November and a Dunlin, 21 Snipe and four Redshanks, 30 November, while 21 Snipe were also noted at Haddiscoe Island, 30 November.

A Red Kite was seen at Ellingham, 30 November. Peregrines were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 26 November and Haddiscoe Island, 30 November; Marsh Harriers at Worlingham Marshes (two), 24 November, Herringfleet Marshes, 25 November, Lopham Fen, 26 November and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (three), 27 November and Barn Owls at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 26 November and Carlton Marshes (two), 30 November.

Pink-footed Geese were noted at Somerleyton Marshes (30), 24 November and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (200), 27 November, while 200 Greylag Geese were present at Carlton Marshes, 29 November and a count of 155 Wigeon was also made at Carlton Marshes, 26 November.

 

17 to 23 November 2019

Five Waxwings were present at the junction of Coney Hill and Ellough Road in Beccles on 18 November, with three noted on 17 November, four on 19 November and one on 23 November. Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (five) and Carlton Marshes (three), 17 November; Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (three), 17 November and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 22 November; Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes (six), 17 November and Lopham Fen, 22 November; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (four) and Belton, 17 November and Lopham Fen (two), 22 November and Kingfishers at Carlton Marshes (two) and Lopham Fen, 17 November. A Blackcap was seen at Lopham Fen, two Chiffchaffs at Carlton Marshes and three Lesser Redpolls at Redgrave Fen, 17 November. A pre-roost count of 25,000 Starlings was made at Lopham Fen on 22 November.

Seven Whooper Swans were present at Carlton Marshes, 22 and 23 November. Other notable wildfowl recorded at Carlton Marshes included a Brent Goose, 17 November and 32 White-fronted Geese, 21 November, while 70 Pink-footed Geese were noted at nearby Oulton Marshes, 23 November. An adult Yellow-legged Gull was seen at Carlton Marshes, 23 November. Little Egrets were reported from Carlton Marshes (ten), 17 November and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 November.

A Jack Snipe was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 November, while waders at Carlton Marshes included a Spotted Redshank, 41 Snipe, 630 Lapwings and four Dunlin, 17 November and six Ruff, 62 Black-tailed Godwits and three Redshanks, 23 November.

Raptors included a Peregrine at Carlton Marshes, 17 November, a Red Kite at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 November, Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes, 17 November and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (four), 22 November and a Barn Owl at Lopham Fen, 19 November.

 

10 to 16 November 2019

Three Waxwings were present at the junction of Coney Hill and Ellough Road in Beccles on 16 November. Two Great White Egrets were seen at Haddiscoe Island and 13 Little Egrets roosted at Carlton Marshes, 16 November.

Notable raptors included a Merlin and a Peregrine at Haddiscoe Island and a Red Kite at Carlton Marshes, 13 November. Marsh Harriers were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 13 November and Carlton Marshes, 16 November and a Barn Owl at Carlton Marshes, 16 November.

Finally, a Green Sandpiper and two Redshanks, together with a Brent Goose were noted at Carlton Marshes, 16 November.

 

3 to 9 November 2019

A Hoopoe was seen at Burgh Castle, 3 November and two late Swallows at Carlton Marshes, 7 November. A Water Pipit, two Chiffchaffs and two Kingfishers were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 3 November and a Grey Wagtail at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 6 November. Bramblings were noted at Oulton, 7 November and Belton, 9 November; Bearded Tits at Oulton Marshes (four), 3 November, Carlton Marshes, 4 November and Haddiscoe Island, 8 November; Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (two), 3 November and Lopham Fen, 6 November and Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (three) and Oulton Marshes (two), 3 November. A count of 80 Pied Wagtails was made at Lopham Fen, 6 November.

A Bittern was seen at Carlton Marshes, 3 and 8 November. Great White Egrets were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 6 November and Haddiscoe Island (two), 8 November and the Little Egret roost at Carlton Marshes peaked at 23 on 3 November.

A Peregrine was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 6 November. Marsh Harriers were noted at Carlton Marshes (five), 3 November, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two) and Lopham Fen, 6 November and Beccles Marshes, 9 November and Short-eared Owls at Haddiscoe Island (four) and Carlton Marshes, 3 November. Two Barn Owls were also reported from Carlton Marshes on 3 November.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Ruff, a Woodcock, 10 Black-tailed Godwits and three Dunlin, 9 November, with a Woodcock also seen at Beccles Marshes on the same day.

 

27 October to 2 November 2019

A Yellow-browed Warbler and a Ring Ouzel were recorded at Burgh Castle, 31 October. Water Pipits were seen at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 31 October and Carlton Marshes, 1 November and Stonechats at Carlton Marshes (two), 27 October and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 2 November. A Kingfisher was noted at Carlton Marshes, 27 October, a Grey Wagtail at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 30 October, two Chiffchaffs at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 November and two Cetti’s Warblers at Lopham Fen, 2 November. Notable counts included 300 Redwings at Beccles Common and 100 Fieldfares at Worlingham Marshes on 28 October.

Two Cranes were seen at Carlton Marshes, 27 and 31 October and were also recorded at Barsham Marshes, 28 October. Two Great White Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes, 31 October, with Little Egrets reported from Oulton Marshes, 27 October and Carlton Marshes (19), 1 November.

A Spotted Redshank was recorded at Burgh Castle, 27 October and a Jack Snipe at Herringfleet Marshes, 31 October. Waders at Carlton Marshes included nine Black-tailed Godwits and a Dunlin, 27 October and a Green Sandpiper and 25 Snipe, 1 November.

A Peregrine was seen at Carlton Marshes, 27 October and five Buzzards at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 November. Marsh Harriers were reported from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (four), 31 October, Carlton Marshes (two), 2 November, Short-eared Owls from Lopham Fen and Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 27 October and Barn Owls from Carlton Marshes (two) and Oulton Marshes, 27 October.

 

20 to 26 October 2019

Two Cranes flew over Carlton Marshes at dusk on 22 October. Great White Egrets were seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 20 and 22 October and Carlton Marshes, 22 to 25 October and Little Egrets at Herringfleet Marshes (three), 20 October and Carlton Marshes (16), 25 October. A Mediterranean Gull was noted at Carlton Marshes, 24 October.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Spotted Redshank and a Bar-tailed Godwit, 22 October, 11 Black-tailed Godwits and a Dunlin, 23 October and two Redshanks, 24 October. A Dunlin and six Black-tailed Godwits were present at Herringfleet Marshes, 20 October.

A Lesser Redpoll was noted at Carlton Marshes, 23 October. Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 20 October and Carlton Marshes (four), 24 October; Grey Wagtails at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 22 October and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 26 October; Stonechats at Herringfleet Marshes (five), 20 October, Carlton Marshes (six), 23 October and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 25 October; Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes (six), 20 October, Carlton Marshes, 24 October and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (five), 25 October; Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen, 22 October and Carlton Marshes (three), 23 October and Kingfishers at Herringfleet Marshes, 20 October and Beccles and Carlton Marshes, 23 October. Red Kites were reported from Herringfleet Marshes, 20 October and Beccles (two), 26 October, Marsh Harriers from Carlton Marshes (three), 24 October and Somerleyton Marshes, 25 October and Barn Owls from Lopham Fen, 22 October and Beccles (two), 23 October.

Two Yellow-browed Warblers were seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 15 October, with one noted the following day. Two Wheatears were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 15 October and a Ring Ouzel at Lopham Fen, 16 October. A late Swallow was seen at Carlton Marshes, 14 October and a Brambling at Ditchingham, 19 October. Stonechats were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two), 14 October, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 15 October and Haddiscoe Island (five), 17 October; Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 15 October, Burgh Castle (four) and Haddiscoe Island (two), 17 October and Carlton Marshes (four), 19 October; Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes, 13 October, Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Lopham Fen, 15 October and Carlton Marshes, 19 October and Kingfishers at Oulton Marshes, 13 October and Carlton Marshes, 15 October. Notable counts of 252 Pied Wagtails at Lopham Fen and 820 Redwings at Carlton Marshes were made on 15 October.

A ringtail Hen Harrier was seen at Worlingham Marshes, 17 October and a Peregrine at Lopham Fen, 19 October. Marsh Harriers were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two) and Burgh Castle, 15 October and Lopham Fen, 19 October and a Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 13 October.

A third-winter Caspian Gull was seen at Carlton Marshes, 13 October. Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (seven) and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 15 October, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 16 October and Burgh Castle (four), 17 October. A flock of 110 Greylag Geese was present at Burgh Castle, 17 October, while wildfowl at Carlton Marshes included 100 Mallard, 13 October, three Pintails, 18 October and 600 Teal, 19 October.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included 13 Black-tailed Godwits and a Dunlin, 13 October, a Green Sandpiper, 18 October and a Spotted Redshank, 19 October, while elsewhere 110 Golden Plovers and 28 Curlews were present at Burgh Castle and a Green Sandpiper at Lopham Fen, 17 October.

A first-winter Ring Ouzel was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 8 October, with three Wheatears at Carlton Marshes, 10 October and a Whinchat also at Carlton Marshes, 11 October. Two late House Martins were noted at St Olaves, 12 October. Two Stonechats were recorded at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 8 October and three Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes, 10 October. Notable counts included 40 Pied Wagtails at Glebe Marshes, Burgh Castle on 6 October and 260 Goldfinches at Carlton Marshes on 11 October.

A Peregrine was seen at Castle Marsh, 8 October and a ringtail Hen Harrier at Carlton Marshes, 10 October, while Marsh Harriers were noted at Castle Marsh, 8 October and Carlton Marshes (four), 11 October.

Great White Egrets were present at Carlton Marshes, 8 and 12 October and Castle Marsh (two), 12 October, with five Little Egrets at Carlton Marshes, 11 October. Counts of 350 Teal and 100 Mallard were made at Carlton Marshes on 9 October and a flock of 150 Pink-footed Geese flew north-east over St Olaves and 400 Greylag Geese were seen at Castle Marsh, 12 October

Waders at Carlton Marshes included 50 Snipe, 9 October and a Dunlin and a Green Sandpiper, 11 October, while elsewhere two Green Sandpipers were recorded at Lopham Fen, 6 October and a Redshank at Castle Marsh, 8 October.

A Jack Snipe was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 October. Other notable waders included a flock of 100 Black-tailed Godwits at Herringfleet Marshes, 2 October, two Black-tailed Godwits at Carlton Marshes, 3 October and three Black-tailed Godwits and 18 Curlews at Burgh Castle, 4 October.

The first Redwings of the autumn were recorded, with records received from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (30) and Worlingham Marshes (two), 3 October, Beccles (ten), 4 October and Lopham Fen (15) and Oulton (two), 5 October. Late summer visitors included seven Swallows at Lopham Fen, 4 October and four Wheatears at Carlton Marshes, 5 October. Stonechats were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 2 October and Carlton Marshes (two), 3 October, Bearded Tits at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (three) and Earsham, 2 October and Burgh Castle (two), 4 October and Kingfishers at Ellingham Mill, Roydon Fen and Worlingham Marshes, 29 September. A count of 60 Pied Wagtails was made at Lopham Fen, 5 October.

The first Pink-footed Geese of the autumn were also reported, with a flock of 80 at Haddiscoe Island, 2 October. Little Egrets were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 30 September, Fritton Marshes, 2 October and Carlton Marshes, 3 October.

Late Hobbies were seen at Blundeston Marshes, Somerleyton and Worlingham Marshes, 29 September. Elsewhere, three Marsh Harriers were hunting at Haddiscoe Island, 2 October, counts of seven Buzzards were made at both Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 30 September and Ditchingham, 2 October and Barn Owls were reported from Beccles Marshes (two), 4 October and Carlton Marshes, 5 October.

An Osprey was present at Carlton Marshes, 23 September, late Hobbies were noted at Beccles Common and Herringfleet Hills, 27 September and Outney Common, Bungay (two), 28 September and seven Buzzards were seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 23 September.

An early Fieldfare was noted at Worlingham Marshes, 23 September, while late summer visitors included Wheatears at Somerleyton, 26 September and Carlton Marshes (two), 28 September and two Reed Warblers and a Sedge Warbler at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 23 September. Two Grey Wagtails and two Kingfishers were seen at Beccles, 26 September and a Nuthatch at Ashby Warren, 27 September. Stonechats were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (three), 23 September and Carlton Marshes, 28 September; Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes (ten) and Burgh Castle (two), 27 September and Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 September and Carlton Marshes (two), 28 September. Notable counts of commoner passerines included 65 Linnets at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 September and 30 Pied Wagtails at Lopham Fen, 28 September.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included two Common Sandpipers and a Green Sandpiper, 22 September and two Greenshanks, 28 September, with a Greenshank and two Ruffs present at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 September.

A count of 280 Greylag Geese was made at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 27 September, while 400 Teal and 200 Greylag Geese were present at Carlton Marshes the following day. Finally, Little Egrets were reported from Carlton Marshes (five), 22 September, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 25 September and Outney Common, 28 September.

A Great White Egret was seen at Carlton Marshes, 21 September, while Little Egrets were noted at Redgrave Fen (two) and Herringfleet Marshes, 15 September and Carlton Marshes (three), 21 September.

Late summer visitors included a Reed Warbler at Redgrave Fen, 15 September, a Yellow Wagtail at Carlton Marshes, 15 September and two Wheatears, also at Carlton Marshes, 21 September. A Cetti’s Warbler and two Stonechats were noted at Carlton Marshes and a Bearded Tit at Herringfleet Marshes, 15 September and a Grey Wagtail and a Kingfisher at Beccles, 19 September.

Notable waders included a Greenshank at Carlton Marshes, four Ruffs and two Green Sandpipers at Herringfleet Marshes and a Green Sandpiper at Redgrave Fen, 15 September.

A Cattle Egret flew high over Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 8 September. Great White Egrets were seen at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 9 September and Herringfleet Marshes, 10 and 11 September and Little Egrets at Carlton Marshes, 8 September and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 11 September. Two Mediterranean Gulls were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 8 September.

Late summer visitors included a Yellow Wagtail at Carlton Marshes, 8 September, a Reed Warbler at Herringfleet Marshes, 11 September, a Sedge Warbler at Carlton Marshes, 14 September and Swifts at Carlton Marshes (two), 8 September and Diss (four) and Harleston (four), 10 September. Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included three Wood Sandpipers, two Ruffs, 12 Green Sandpipers and 35 Snipe, 1 September and a Spotted Redshank and a Common Sandpiper, 6 September, while at Carlton Marshes, four Greenshanks, a Common Sandpiper and two Green Sandpipers were present on 1 September and ten Black-tailed Godwits on 7 September. At Lopham Fen, six Greenshanks and two Green Sandpipers were noted on 1 September.

Passerines at Carlton Marshes included two Swifts, 6 September and two Wheatears and a Reed Warbler, 7 September. Yellow Wagtails were noted at Herringfleet Marshes (three), 1 September and Burgh Castle (65 roosted), 4 September and a Kingfisher was seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 6 September.

Hobbies were present at Carlton Marshes (two), 1 September, Somerleyton, 4 September, Herringfleet, 5 September, Beccles, 6 September and Lopham Fen, 7 September, while five Buzzards were noted at Carlton Marshes, 1 September. Also at Carlton Marshes, a Short-eared Owl and a Barn Owl were seen on 4 September.

A juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was recorded at Carlton Marshes, 1 September, while Little Egrets were reported from Lopham Fen (17), Carlton Marshes (two) and Herringfleet Marshes (two) on the same day.

A Pied Flycatcher, and also a Cuckoo, were seen at Carlton Marshes, 25 August, with two Whinchats at Herringfleet Marshes, 29 August. A Spotted Flycatcher was noted at Beccles Common, 26 August, with Kingfishers at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 27 August and Beccles, 31 August and a Cetti’s Warbler at Carlton Marshes, also 31 August.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included two Wood Sandpipers, six Green Sandpipers and three Ruffs, 29 August, while waders at Carlton Marshes included four Green Sandpipers, 25 August, 26 Snipe, 26 August, two Greenshanks, 27 August and two Common Sandpipers, 31 August. Elsewhere, a Greenshank and three Green Sandpipers were present at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe and two Green Sandpipers at Redgrave Fen, 25 August, with a Greenshank at Lopham Fen the following day.

Two Great White Egrets circled high over Waveney River Centre at Burgh St Peter early afternoon on 25 August and Little Egrets were recorded at Redgrave Fen (11), Carlton Marshes (five) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 August. A count of 20 Mediterranean Gulls feeding on flying ants above Oulton was made on 25 August and a juvenile Caspian Gull was seen at Carlton Marshes, 31 August.

Red Kites were noted at Belton (four), 26 August and Carlton Marshes and St Olaves, 29 August, Hobbies at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two) and Beccles, 25 August and Carlton Marshes (four), 29 August, while a count of eight Buzzards was made at Carlton Marshes, 26 August. Finally, Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes (three) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 August.

 

18 to 24 August 2019

Two Pied Flycatchers were recorded at Burgh Castle, 24 August, with two Turtle Doves at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe on the same day. Elsewhere, two Cetti’s Warblers were noted at Carlton Marshes, 18 August, a Bearded Tit at Lopham Fen, 20 August, a Nuthatch also at Lopham Fen, 21 August, a Spotted Flycatcher at Beccles Common, 22 August and a Kingfisher at Earsham, 23 August. A count of 150 Swallows was made at Worlingham Sewage Works, 20 August.

A Spotted Redshank was present at Herringfleet Marshes, 21 August. A Curlew and two Green Sandpipers were seen at Lopham Fen, 22 August, with two Green Sandpipers also recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 August.

A Red Kite was seen at Lopham Fen, 21 August, Hobbies were recorded at Lopham Fen, 18 August, Ashby Warren, 23 August and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (three), 24 August and a Barn Owl was noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 August.

Finally, Little Egrets were reported from Carlton Marshes (four), 20 August and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 August.

 

11 to 17 August 2019

An Osprey was seen at Burgh Castle, 17 August, and what was probably the same individual was observed over Carlton Marshes at midday. Hobbies were recorded at Beccles, 12 August, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 13 August, South Lopham (two), 16 August and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 17 August, with ten Buzzards in the air together at Herringfleet Marshes on the same day. A Barn Owl was noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 13 August.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included a Wood Sandpiper and three Greenshanks, 15 August, a Spotted Redshank, two Green Sandpipers and a Dunlin, 16 August and five Black-tailed Godwits, 17 August; at Carlton Marshes included a Black-tailed Godwit, 15 August and five Green Sandpipers, 17 August; at Burgh Castle included a Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper, 15 August and at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe included a Green Sandpiper, 13 August and a Greenshank, 15 August.

Two Spotted Flycatchers were seen at Beccles Common, 11 August, Yellow Wagtails were recorded at Burgh Castle (203 roosted) and Herringfleet Marshes, 15 August and a Kingfisher was noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 16 August.

A Mediterranean Gull was seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 15 August and a Little Egret was noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 13 August.

The excellent run of Wood Sandpiper sightings continued with 10 at Herringfleet Marshes, 6 August and singles at Carlton Marshes, 4 August and Earsham GP, 9 August. Other waders at Herringfleet Marshes included two Black-tailed Godwits and 11 Green Sandpipers, 4 August, a Common Sandpiper, 7 August and six Greenshank and six Dunlin, 9 August; at Carlton Marshes included two Black-tailed Godwits and six Green Sandpipers, 5 August and at Earsham GP included six Green Sandpipers and two Common Sandpipers, 9 August. Also, two Green Sandpipers were seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 5 August.

Eight Mediterranean Gulls were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 5 August. Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes, 4 August, Carlton Marshes (five) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 5 August and Redgrave Fen (five), 6 August.

Other waders at Herringfleet Marshes included six Greenshanks, two Black-tailed Godwits, 15 Green Sandpipers, 11 Common Sandpipers, two Snipe and a Curlew, 28 July, while at Carlton Marshes waders included three Golden Plovers, eight Green Sandpipers and five Common Sandpipers, 28 July, 26 Black-tailed Godwits, 29 July, a Dunlin, 1 August and three Greenshanks and a Little Ringed Plover, 2 August. Elsewhere, nine Green Sandpipers were present at Earsham GP, 28 July and two Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper and three Snipe at Redgrave Fen, 31 July.

Elsewhere, Green Sandpipers were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 23 July and Earsham GP (seven), 25 July and six Common Sandpipers were noted along the riverbank at North Cove, 26 July.

A singing Grasshopper Warbler was heard at Lopham Fen, 21 July and a Grey Wagtail was seen at Ditchingham, 23 July.

Cuckoos were reported from Oulton Marshes (two) and Lopham Fen, 23 June and Castle Marsh and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 June, Grasshopper Warblers from Lopham Fen, 23 June and Carlton Marshes, 29 June and Cetti’s Warblers from Lopham Fen, 23 June, Castle Marsh, 24 June and Carlton Marshes (three), 29 June.

A Honey Buzzard drifted south low over Black Boy Meadow, Beccles and a Red Kite was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 29 June, Hobbies were recorded at Lopham Fen (two) and Castle Marsh, 24 June, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 June and Carlton Marshes, 29 June and Barn Owls at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 June and Carlton Marshes (three), 29 June.

Notable waders included a Greenshank and a Green Sandpiper at Carlton Marshes, 23 June and two Whimbrel at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 29 June.

Finally, Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (six), 23 June, Castle Marsh and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 June.

A Spoonbill flew high south-east over Carlton Marshes during the morning of 16 June, while Little Egrets were recorded at Redgrave Fen, 17 June, Herringfleet Marshes (five), 20 June and Carlton Marshes (seven), 22 June.

A Spotted Redshank and three Curlews were seen at Carlton Marshes, 22 June, five Black-tailed Godwits at Herringfleet Marshes, 20 June and a Green Sandpiper at Earsham GP, 22 June.

A Turtle Dove was heard at Redgrave, 22 June, with a Kingfisher at nearby Redgrave Fen, 17 June. Cuckoos were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 17 June, Worlingham Marshes, 20 June, Lopham Fen, 21 June and Carlton Marshes (two), 22 June, Grasshopper Warblers at Carlton Marshes and Lopham Fen, 21 June and Oulton Marshes, 22 June and Cetti’s Warblers at Lopham Fen (two) and Oulton Marshes, 22 June.

Hobbies were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 17 June and Lopham Fen (two), 22 June and a Barn Owl was seen at Carlton Marshes, 20 June.

A Spotted Flycatcher was seen at Beccles Common, 10 June, three Yellow Wagtails at Carlton Marshes, 11 June and a Bearded Tit at Herringfleet Marshes, 14 June. Grasshopper Warblers were noted at Carlton Marshes and Herringfleet Marshes, 11 June and Cuckoos at Castle Marsh, North Cove (two) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 11 June and Lopham Fen and Worlingham Marshes, 15 June.

Red Kites were seen at Castle Marsh and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 14 June and Hobbies at Castle Marsh(four), 11 June, Herringfleet Marshes and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 14 June and Oulton Marshes, 15 June. A Short-eared Owl was recorded at Carlton Marshes, 11 June and a Barn Owl at the same site, 13 June.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included a Greenshank and a Dunlin, 9 June, three Avocets, nine Black-tailed Godwits and nine Green Sandpipers, 11 June and two Little Ringed Plovers and five Redshanks, 14 June. Three Curlews were seen at Carlton Marshes, 11 June.

A Marsh Warbler was singing at Oulton Marshes on 5 June, with another singing at a different location on the same marsh the following day. Spotted Flycatchers were noted at North Cove and Oulton Marshes, 2 June; Cuckoos at Lopham Fen, 2 June, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), Carlton Marshes and North Cove, 3 June and Oulton Marshes, 6 June; Grasshopper Warblers at Oulton Marshes (four), 3 June and Carlton Marshes, 6 June and Cetti’s Warblers at Lopham Fen, 2 June, Carlton Marshes and North Cove, 3 June.

Red Kites were noted at Carlton Marshes, 3 June, Haddiscoe Island (four) and North Cove, 5 June and Hobbies at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), Carlton Marshes and North Cove, 3 June, Oulton Marshes, 5 June and Herringfleet Hills, 6 June. A Short-eared Owl was seen at Carlton Marshes, 4 June, while Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes, 3 June and Mettingham, 5 June.

Greenshanks were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (three) and Earsham GP (two), 2 June.

The singing Savi’s Warbler at Carlton Marshes was heard up to 21 May and two Spotted Flycatchers were seen at Beccles Common, 24 May. Three Yellow Wagtails were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 24 May, while Grasshopper Warblers were noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 20 May and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 May; Cetti’s Warblers at Burgh Castle, 19 May, Carlton Marshes (five), 21 May and Lopham Fen (two) and Oulton Marshes, 25 May and Cuckoos at Burgh Castle, 19 May, Redgrave Fen (two), 20 May, Beccles Common, 21 May, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), Earsham GP and Weybread, 24 May and Carlton Marshes (two) and Oulton Marshes, 25 May. A Stonechat was seen at Carlton Marshes and five Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes, 21 May and a Grey Wagtail at Homersfield, 25 May.

The wader highlight of the week was a Curlew Sandpiper at Herringfleet Marshes on 21 May. Other notable waders at this site included a Grey Plover, a Ringed Plover and a Little Ringed Plover, 19 May and three Greenshanks, 20 May. Waders seen at Carlton Marshes included a Wood Sandpiper, 19 May, a Whimbrel, 20 May, three Common Sandpipers and three Redshanks, 22 May and 76 Black-tailed Godwits, 25 May, at Burgh Castle waders included a Greenshank, 19 May, five Whimbrels, six Knot, ten Grey Plovers and three Golden Plovers, 22 May and 13 Avocets and 120 Black-tailed Godwits, 23 May, while a Ringed Plover and a Dunlin were present at Earsham GP, 24 May.

A male Mandarin Duck was seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 19 May and a male Garganey was present at Carlton Marshes, 24 and 25 May.

A Great White Egret flew east at Earsham and two Spoonbills circled Carlton Marshes, 25 May. Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes (six), 19 May, Beccles Marshes (four) and Burgh Castle, 22 May, Lopham Fen, 23 May and Earsham GP and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 24 May.

A Glossy Ibis was present briefly at Herringfleet Marshes, 18 May and two Cranes flew over Lopham Fen, 14 May. Little Egrets were reported from Carlton Marshes (four), 12 May, Aldeby shooting lakes and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 14 May and Herringfleet Marshes (four), 17 May.

An Osprey was seen at Earsham GP, 16 May and a Red Kite at Carlton Marshes, 12 May. An impressive count of 18 Hobbies was made between Carlton Marshes and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 14 May, while elsewhere Hobbies were seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 12 May, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 14 May and Lopham Fen (three), 15 May A Short-eared Owl was recorded at Carlton Marshes, 12 May, with Barn Owls noted at Oulton Marshes and Weybread, 12 May.

A Wood Sandpiper was present at Herringfleet Marshes from 14 to 17 May, while other wader sightings at this site included three Little Ringed Plovers, 12 May, six Greenshanks, 15 May, 21 Black-tailed Godwits, 17 May and an Avocet, ten Ringed Plovers, a Green Sandpiper, two Common Sandpipers, two Dunlin and 30 Redshanks, 18 May. Elsewhere, an Avocet, a Common Sandpiper and two Redshanks were seen at Oulton Marshes and three Redshanks at Carlton Marshes, 12 May, 17 Bar-tailed Godwits at Aldeby shooting lakes and two Redshanks at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 14 May, a Black-tailed Godwit at Carlton Marshes and two Common Sandpipers at Beccles Marshes, 17 May and a Common Sandpipers at Weybread GP, 18 May.

Two Black Terns were seen at Weybread GP, 17 May. Finally, notable ducks at Herringfleet Marshes included a male Garganey, 12 May and three Mandarin Ducks, 18 May.

Yellow Wagtails were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (ten), 5 May and Carlton Marshes (two), 6 May; Grasshopper Warblers at Lopham Fen, 6 May and Castle Marsh, 7 May and Carlton Marshes, 9 May; Cetti’s Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 May and Carlton Marshes (four) and Lopham Fen, 11 May and Cuckoos at Beccles Marshes, Carlton Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 5 May, Lopham Fen (two), 6 May, Castle Marsh and Herringfleet Marshes, 7 May and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 10 May. Two Bearded Tits were noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 May, a Kingfisher at Weybread GP, 6 May, a pair of Stonechats feeding two young at Castle Marsh, 7 May and three Grey Wagtails at Worlingham, 11 May. Counts of 100 Swallows and 40 Pied Wagtails were made at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 May and 200 Sand Martins at Redgrave Lake, 6 May.

A Black Kite flew south at Herringfleet Marshes early afternoon on 7 May and an Osprey was seen at Broome GP, 9 May. Hobbies were reported from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 5 May, Redgrave Lake, 6 May, Castle Marsh and Oulton Marshes, 7 May, Carlton Marshes, 9 May and Herringfleet Marshes (three), 11 May.

Seven Little Gulls were present at Redgrave Lake, 7 May and 11 Black Terns and an Arctic Tern at Weybread GP the following day.

A group of seven Cranes circled Carlton Marshes on 9 May before flying off south. A Spoonbill was seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 6 May and a Great White Egret at Barnby Marshes, 9 May, while Little Egrets were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (13), 5 May, Weybread GP, 6 May, Carlton Marshes, 7 May and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 10 May.

Male Garganeys were present at Aldeby shooting lakes, 6 May and Herringfleet Marshes, 7 and 9 May and seven Mandarin Ducks was also noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 5 May.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included two Little Ringed Plovers and 30 Redshanks, 5 May, a Snipe, 6 May, eight Wood Sandpipers and four Dunlin, 7 May, a Green Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, 15 Black-tailed Godwits and three Ringed Plovers, 9 May and nine Greenshanks, 11 May. Elsewhere, Whimbrels were recorded at Castle Marsh (46) and Carlton Marshes (three), 5 May, Common Sandpipers at Weybread GP, 6 May and Earsham GP, 8 May and Redshanks at Carlton Marshes, 5 May and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 10 May.

An adult White-tailed Eagle flew south over Carlton Marshes during the afternoon of 30 April. Other notable sightings of raptors at Carlton Marshes included a Short-eared Owl on 28 April and two Hobbies on 1 May, while Red Kites were seen at Worlingham, 29 April and Beccles Marshes, 3 May.

Notable passerines at Carlton Marshes included a Tree Pipit and a Ring Ouzel, 28 April and 1 May and a White Wagtail and seven Wheatears, 29 April, with a further White Wagtail at Herringfleet Marshes, 28 April. A Nightingale was present at Herringfleet Marshes, 28 April and two Turtle Doves at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe the following day. A male Garganey, two Mandarin Ducks and a Pintail were present at Herringfleet Marshes, 4 May. A Mediterranean Gull was seen at the same site on 28 April, while Little Egrets were reported from Oulton Marshes (six) and Herringfleet Marshes (four), 30 April and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 3 May.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included a Wood Sandpiper, a Grey Plover, two Whimbrels, three Ruff, five Little Ringed Plovers, two Green Sandpipers and a Dunlin, 28 April and four Greenshanks, 4 May, while waders at Carlton Marshes included a Wood Sandpiper, five Common Sandpipers and a Little Ringed Plover, 29 April. Further Whimbrels were present at Beccles Marshes (12), 30 April and Castle Marsh, North Cove (38), 1 May.

The long-staying male Green-winged Teal at Herringfleet Marshes was last seen on 24 April, while four Mandarin Ducks and 100 Teal were present at the same site on 21 April.

A White Wagtail and two Water Pipits were present at Herringfleet Marshes, 22 April, a Blue-headed Wagtail at Carlton Marshes, 25 April and Wheatears at Carlton Marshes (two), 21 April and Herringfleet Marshes, 26 April. The first Nightingale (Somerleyton, 25 April), Garden Warbler (Ashby, 25 April) and Swift (Wortwell, 26 April) of the year were recorded during the week. Cuckoos were noted at Beccles Marshes, 21 April, Lopham Fen and Castle Marsh, North Cove, 22 April, Oulton Marshes, 24 April, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe and Worlingham Marshes, 25 April; Grasshopper Warblers at Herringfleet Marshes (three) and Oulton Marshes (three), 21 April, St Olaves, 24 April, Carlton Marshes (four), 25 April and Beccles Marshes, 26 April; Yellow Wagtails at Carlton Marshes (three), 21 April and Herringfleet Marshes (four), 26 April and Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (six), Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Lopham Fen, 22 April and Oulton Marshes, 25 April. The first Hobby of the year was seen at Worlingham Marshes, 22 April. Other notable raptors included a ringtail Hen Harrier at Carlton Marshes, 21 April, a Peregrine at Oulton Marshes, 25 April and Red Kites at Carlton Marshes, 21 April and Blundeston (two), 26 April. Short-eared Owls were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 21 April and Worlingham Marshes, 22 April and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes, 22 April, North Cove (two), 24 April and Oulton Marshes, 25 April.

Mediterranean Gulls were seen at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 22 April, Oulton Marshes (two), 24 April and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 April and 11 Sandwich Terns flew west at Burgh Castle, 27 April. Finally, Little Egrets were noted at Herringfleet Marshes (six), 21 April and Belton and Redgrave Fen, 26 April.

 

14 to 20 April 2019

A pair of Garganey was present at Aldeby shooting lakes all week, while other wildfowl present at this site included two redhead Goosanders on 14 April and a Goldeneye on 18 April. The long-staying male Green-winged Teal was present at Herringfleet Marshes all week, while other wildfowl present at this site included three Mandarin Ducks on 14 April, a Goldeneye on 16 April and a count of 109 Teal on 19 April. Two Mandarin Ducks were also present at Fritton Lake, 15 April.

An Osprey flew over Beccles on 20 April. Other notable raptors included a ringtail Hen Harrier at Belton Marshes, 14 April and Red Kites at Herringfleet Marshes and Shipmeadow, 16 April, Somerleyton (two), 17 April and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), Carlton Marshes and Thorpe Abbotts, 19 April, while high counts of Buzzards included eight at Oulton Marshes and five at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 19 April. Short-eared Owls were noted at Carlton Marshes, 14 April and Haddiscoe Island, 18 April and a Barn Owl at Aldeby, 20 April.

A Cattle Egret was reported from Ditchingham, 15 April, with Great White Egrets recorded at Carlton Marshes (two), Aldeby shooting lakes and Belton Marshes, 20 April and Little Egrets from Redgrave Fen, 14 April, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 15 April, Carlton Marshes (two), 17 April and Herringfleet Marshes (eight), 18 April. Five Cranes flew south-east over Somerleyton on 18 April. Wandering, fly-over Mediterranean Gulls were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 18 April and Beccles (two), 20 April.

Notable passerine spring migrants included a White Wagtail at Herringfleet Marshes, 17 April, four Wheatears at Carlton Marshes, 18 April and a male Ring Ouzel at Fritton, 19 April. Two Bramblings were seen at Beccles, 15 April and four Water Pipits at Herringfleet Marshes, 18 April. The first Grasshopper Warbler (Carlton Marshes, 14 April, with others at Oulton Marshes (three) and Lopham Fen, 17 April and Aldeby, 20 April), Cuckoo (Carlton Marshes, 17 April, with others at Aldeby, Lopham Fen and Oulton Marshes, 20 April.), Reed Warbler (Oulton Marshes, 17 April), Whitethroat (Carlton Marshes, 19 April) and Lesser Whitethroat (Carlton Marshes, 20 April) were recorded during the week. Yellow Wagtail, Carlton Marshes, Herringfleet Marshes, 14 April. Cetti’s Warblers were noted at Lopham Fen, 14 April, Oulton Marshes (four), 18 April and Carlton Marshes (ten), Worlingham Marshes (two) and Aldeby, 20 April and Bearded Tits at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 15 April and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 16 April. A Grey Wagtail was seen at Beccles Common, 14 April and two Stonechats at Carlton Marshes and two Kingfishers at Redgrave Fen, 20 April.

 The first two Whimbrel of the spring were present at Castle Marsh, North Cove on 18 April, increasing to six the following day and eight on 20 April and two Common Sandpipers were present at Weybread GP, 19 April. Waders at Aldeby shooting lakes included two Avocets and seven Black-tailed Godwits, 14 April and a Greenshank, 18 April; at Carlton Marshes included a Little Ringed Plover, 16 April, seven Black-tailed Godwits and a Green Sandpiper, 18 April and a Jack Snipe, 19 April; at Herringfleet Marshes included two Ruff, 16 April, five Green Sandpipers, 17 April and two Ringed Plovers and five Little Ringed Plovers, 19 April and at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe included two Redshanks, 15 April, a Ruff, 16 April and a Green Sandpiper, 20 April.

 

7 to 13 April 2019

The male White-spotted Bluethroat was seen again at Herringfleet Marshes early morning on 7 April. A Firecrest was recorded at Ashby, 12 April, with Water Pipits present at Carlton Marshes (six), 7 April and Herringfleet Marshes (nine), 13 April. The first Yellow Wagtail (Carlton Marshes, 7 April, with another at Herringfleet Marshes the following day) and House Martin (three at Worlingham Marshes, 8 April) were noted during the week. Bearded Tits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (five), 7 April and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 8 April and Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (four) and Herringfleet Marshes, 7 April and Oulton Marshes, 9 April, with a Kingfisher seen at Blundeston Marshes, 13 April.

The long-staying male Green-winged Teal at Herringfleet Marshes was present all week, while other wildfowl at the same site included three Mandarin Ducks and 300 Teal on 7 April.

Two Cranes were seen at Lopham Fen, 8 April, while Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes (six), 7 April and Burgh Castle (two), 11 April. Two Little Gulls were present at Weybread GP, 10 April, along with the first Common Tern of the year.

A Jack Snipe and 15 Snipe were recorded at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 9 April and two Spotted Redshanks, 92 Avocets, 56 Black-tailed Godwits, 31 Curlews, 63 Dunlin and 120 Redshanks at Burgh Castle, 11 April. Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Ruff, a Green Sandpiper and three Redshanks, 7 April and eight Black-tailed Godwits, 10 April and at Herringfleet Marshes included three Ruff, three Little Ringed Plovers, 30 Redshanks and 20 Snipe, 7 April and two Green Sandpipers, 12 April. Redshank were also noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 8 April and Oulton Marshes, 9 April.

Single Red Kites were seen at Fritton, 9 April, Ashby, 12 April and Somerleyton, 13 April, with a Peregrine noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 7 April and a Short-eared Owl at Carlton Marshes, 13 April.

 

31 March to 6 April 2019

A male White-spotted Bluethroat was found at Herringfleet Marshes on 6 April. The first Swallow (Beccles Marshes, 31 March), Sand Martin (Carlton Marshes, 31 March), Sedge Warbler (Carlton Marshes, 5 April) and Willow Warbler (Beccles Marshes, 5 April) of the year were all recorded during the week. Water Pipits were recorded at Carlton Marshes (five), 3 April and Herringfleet Marshes (13), 6 April and Cetti’s Warblers at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 April and Carlton Marshes (eight) and Lopham Fen, 6 April. Further noteworthy passerines included two Bearded Tits at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 April, a Stonechat at Carlton Marshes, 3 April and a Brambling at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 6 April

The long-staying male Green-winged Teal at Herringfleet Marshes remained all week, with a count of 120 Teal made at the same site on 31 March.

Waders at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe included two Redshanks, 2 April and two Jack Snipe, 4 April, at Carlton Marshes included a Ringed Plover and 12 Redshanks, 31 March, ten Avocets, 3 April and six Ruff, 6 April and at Herringfleet Marshes included four Redshanks, 31 March, a Green Sandpiper, 2 April and eight Ruff, 6 April. Three Redshanks were noted at Oulton Marshes, 1 April.

Notable raptors included single Red Kites at Somerleyton, 31 March and Aldeby, 4 April, a Peregrine at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 5 April, two Short-eared Owls at Haddiscoe Marshes, 3 April and a Barn Owl at Carlton Marshes, 1 April.

Finally, Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes (five) and Carlton Marshes, 31 March.

 

24 to 30 March 2019

The male Green-winged Teal at Herringfleet Marshes was present all week and has now been present over a month. Two Mandarins were noted at St Olaves, 28 March.

Two Cranes were seen at Lopham Fen, 28 March. Little Egrets were present at Carlton Marshes (13) and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 27 March and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 28 March.

A Wheatear was recorded at Carlton Marshes, seven Water Pipits at Herringfleet Marshes, two Lesser Redpolls at St Olaves and a Bearded Tit at Herringfleet Marshes, 28 March. Bramblings were reported from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 24 March and Waveney Forest, Fritton, 26 March and Cetti’s Warblers from Beccles Marshes, 24 March, Carlton Marshes (seven), 27 March, Herringfleet Marshes, 28 March and Lopham Fen, 30 March.

A Jack Snipe and 35 Snipe were seen at Castle Marsh, North Cove and also 35 Snipe at Ashby, 24 March and two Spotted Redshanks at Burgh Castle, 30 March. Waders at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe included four Redshanks, 24 March and a Jack Snipe, 29 March; Herringfleet Marshes included seven Redshanks, 28 March and a Jack Snipe and 21 Ruff, 30 March and Carlton Marshes included two Avocets, 24 March, 14 Redshanks, 27 March and four Black-tailed Godwits and 17 Snipe, 28 March. Woodcock were recorded at St Olaves (two) and Somerleyton, 28 March.

Raptors at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe included ten Marsh Harriers, 24 March, nine Buzzards, 29 March and a Short-eared Owl, 30 March, while nearby a ringtail Hen Harrier was seen at Haddiscoe Island, 24 March and three Red Kites flew north at Haddiscoe Marshes, 29 March. 17 to 23 March 2019

An immature White-tailed Eagle flew high south over Burgh Castle, Belton and Waveney Forest, Fritton before heading east over Somerleyton and Blundeston and back north again on the morning of 23 March. Raptors recorded at Carlton Marshes included a Peregrine and a Barn Owl, 17 March and two Red Kites and ten Buzzards, 23 March. Elsewhere, a Hen Harrier was seen at Lopham Fen, 18 March, a Red Kite at Beccles, 23 March, Marsh Harriers at Lopham Fen (four), 19 March and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (ten), 21 March and a Short-eared Owl at Haddiscoe Island, 17 March.

A Greenland White-fronted Goose, a very rare bird in East Anglia, was seen at Oulton Marshes, 21 March and Carlton Marshes, 23 March. The male Green-winged Teal remained at Herringfleet Marshes all week and a count of 154 Teal was made at the same site on 18 March. A first-winter male Goldeneye was present at Weybread GP, 20 and 21 March.

Water Pipits were seen at Carlton Marshes (six) and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 23 March. The first Wheatears of the spring were present at Carlton Marshes (two), 21 March and the first singing male Blackcaps were heard at Weybread GP, 20 March and Lopham Fen and Worlingham, 23 March. A Brambling was noted at Herringfleet, 18 March and a Bearded Tit at Herringfleet Marshes, 19 March. Grey Wagtails were recorded at Worlingham, 17 March, Weybread Mill, 20 March and Beccles Common, 23 March and Cetti’s Warblers at Lopham Fen (two), 18 March, Oulton Marshes, 21 March and Worlingham Marshes (two), 23 March. A count of 50 Pied Wagtails was made at Lopham Fen, 17 March.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included 12 Avocets, five Dunlin, eight Redshanks, 17 March and a Woodcock, 23 March. Waders at Herringfleet Marshes, six Redshanks, 18 March, five Ruff, 23 March. Elsewhere, a Woodcock was seen at Beccles Common, 18 March, two Redshanks at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 19 March and a Green Sandpiper by Beccles southern relief road, 21 March.

Finally, Little Egrets were recorded at Carlton Marshes (17) and Lopham Fen, 17 March, Beccles Common, 19 March, Weybread GP (two), 20 March and Herringfleet Marshes (11), 21 March.

 

10 to 16 March 2019

The male Green-winged Teal at Herringfleet Marshes remained all week, while eight Goosanders were seen at Carlton Marshes, 14 March.

A Cattle Egret roosted at Carlton Marshes on the evening of 10 March, while Little Egrets were reported at Carlton Marshes (21), 14 March and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 16 March.

A very impressive count of 27 Water Pipits was made at Herringfleet Marshes, 10 March, while high counts of Pied Wagtails included 36 at Herringfleet Marshes, 11 March and 65 at Lopham Fen, 16 March. A Lesser Redpoll was recorded at St Olaves, 10 March, two Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes, 11 March, a Brambling at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 12 March and three Grey Wagtails at Beccles Common, 13 March. Cetti’s Warblers were noted at Carlton Marshes and Herringfleet Marshes, 11 March and Lopham Fen (three), 15 March.

A Peregrine was seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 16 March. Hen Harriers were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 15 March and Lopham Fen, 16 March; Red Kites at Herringfleet Hills, 11 March, Carlton Marshes, 14 March, St Olaves, 15 March and Brooke and Gillingham, 16 March; Marsh Harriers at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (six), 11 March and Carlton Marshes (four), Lopham Fen (two) and Somerleyton Marshes, 15 March; Short-eared Owls at Haddiscoe Island, 10 March and Carlton Marshes, 11 March and Barn Owls at Lopham Fen, Somerleyton and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 11 March and Carlton Marshes (two), 16 March.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included two Redshanks, 15 March and two Dunlin, 16 March. A Green Sandpiper was again present by Beccles southern relief road and two Woodcock were seen at Lopham Fen, 11 March and six Redshanks were present at Herringfleet Marshes, 16 March.

 

3 to 9 March 2019

The male Green-winged Teal found last week at Herringfleet Marshes remained all week, with a count of 221 Teal at the same site on 9 March. A Goosander flew east over Carlton Marshes on 6 March.

A Cattle Egret was seen at Carlton Marshes on 3 and 6 March and was joined by a Great White Egret on the first date, while Little Egrets were reported from Burgh Castle (three), 5 March, Carlton Marshes (15), 6 March and Herringfleet Marshes (ten), 8 March.

Water Pipits were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (27) and Carlton Marshes (two), 9 March. A Cetti’s Warbler was noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 8 March, a Brambling at Somerleyton, 9 March and Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Carlton Marshes, 9 March.

Single Red Kites were seen at Lopham Fen, 3 March and Worlingham, 4 March and Marsh Harriers were reported from Lopham Fen, 3 March, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (seven), 5 March, Carlton Marshes (seven), 7 March and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 9 March, with five Buzzards noted at Somerleyton, 4 March and Carlton Marshes the following day. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton Marshes, 5 March, with a Barn Owl noted at the same site on 9 March.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included six Ruff, a Ringed Plover, a Black-tailed Godwit and 15 Snipe, 7 March, eight Dunlin, 8 March and eight Redshanks, 9 March and waders at Carlton Marshes included a Woodcock, 3 March, seven Redshanks, 7 March and seven Dunlin, 9 March. A Green Sandpiper was again seen by Beccles southern relief road, 4 March, ten Avocets, 20 Black-tailed Godwits, 36 Curlews and 11 Redshanks were recorded at Burgh Castle, 5 March and a Woodcock was seen at Somerleyton, 9 March.

 

24 February to 2 March 2019

A male Green-winged Teal was found at Herringfleet Marshes on 26 February and stayed for the remainder of the week. Other notable wildfowl included 200 Teal at Herringfleet Marshes, 1 March and 325 Wigeon at Oulton Marshes, 2 March, with an escaped Black Swan also at Herringfleet Marshes, 28 February.

A Cattle Egret was seen at Carlton Marshes regularly throughout the week, with a Great White Egret noted at the same site on 1 March. A Bittern was recorded at Haddiscoe Island, 24 February, while Little Egrets were reported from Herringfleet Marshes (six), 28 February and Carlton Marshes (12), 1 March.

A very impressive 26 Water Pipits, along with a single Rock Pipit, were present at Herringfleet Marshes, 2 March, with five Water Pipits also present at Carlton Marshes, 1 March. The first singing Chiffchaffs of the year were heard at Carlton Marshes, 28 February, Herringfleet, 1 March and Somerleyton, 2 March. Grey Wagtails were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes, 27 February, Beccles, 28 February and Worlingham, 2 March, Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (six), 24 February and Herringfleet Marshes, 25 February and Kingfishers at Ellingham Mill, 24 February and Worlingham Marshes (two), 2 March. Two Stonechats were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 25 February and three Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes and a flock of 120 Fieldfares at Blundeston, 27 February.

Elsewhere, two Red Kites were seen at Gillingham and a Peregrine at Carlton Marshes, 2 March. Marsh Harriers were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 27 February and Carlton Marshes (six) and Blundeston Marshes, 2 March, a Short-eared Owl was hunting at Herringfleet Marshes, 28 February and Barn Owls were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 25 February and Carlton Marshes (two), 2 March.

Waders at Carlton Marshes included a Ruff, 24 February, three Avocets, 28 February and a Jack Snipe, 1 March and waders at Herringfleet Marshes included six Ruff, 25 February, 120 Snipe and a Black-tailed Godwit, 27 February, two Redshanks, 1 March and five Dunlin, 2 March, with a Woodcock at nearby Herringfleet Hills, 2 March.

Finally, an adult Mediterranean Gull was noted at Somerleyton Marshes, 27 February.

 

17 to 23 February 2019

A Cattle Egret was recorded at Carlton Marshes regularly throughout the week at either dawn or dusk. Little Egrets were noted at Outney Common, Bungay, 17 February, Beccles Common, 18 February, Carlton Marshes (12), 19 February and Herringfleet Marshes (six), 23 February.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included two Rough-legged Buzzards, two Merlins, a ringtail Hen Harrier, a Peregrine, a Red Kite, 30 Marsh Harriers, eight Buzzards, five Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl, 17 February. Elsewhere, a Peregrine was seen at Carlton Marshes, 17 February, Marsh Harriers at Lopham Fen, 17 February, Carlton Marshes (11), 18 February and Oulton Marshes, 23 February, a Short-eared Owl at Carlton Marshes, 23 February and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes (three), 18 February and Beccles Marshes and Oulton Marshes, 23 February.

Water Pipits were present at Carlton Marshes (three), 17 February and Herringfleet Marshes (18), 23 February. A Grey Wagtail was noted at Beccles, 17 February and a singing Chiffchaff at Carlton Marshes, a Blackcap at Redlingfield, 20 February and two Stonechats at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 February. Lesser Redpolls were recorded at Beccles, 17 February and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 22 February, Bearded Tits at Carlton Marshes (two), 17 February and Herringfleet Marshes, 23 February, Cetti’s Warblers at Oulton Marshes, 17 February and Carlton Marshes (three), 18 February and Kingfishers at Redgrave Fen, 17 February, Carlton Marshes, 21 February and Aldeby (three), 23 February. A flock of 135 Fieldfares was counted at Outney Common, 17 February.

A combined site count from Carlton and Oulton Marshes on 17 February included 162 Snipe. Two Woodcock were also noted at Oulton Marshes, 17 February, the regular Green Sandpiper was seen by the Beccles southern relief road, 19 February and three Ruff were present at Carlton Marshes, 21 February.

Combined site counts from Carlton and Oulton Marshes on 17 February also included 410 Wigeon and 200 Teal, while 235 Teal were present at Herringfleet Marshes, 23 February. Finally, an escaped Red-breasted Goose was noted at Redgrave Fen, 17 February.

 

10 to 16 February 2019

A Great White Egret was seen at Somerleyton Marshes, 13 February, while Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (three) and Oulton Marshes (two), 11 February and Haddiscoe Island, 14 February.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Merlin, 10 February, a Peregrine, 13 February and a Rough-legged Buzzard, a ringtail Hen Harrier, four Marsh Harriers, six Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl, 14 February. Elsewhere, a Red Kite was seen at Carlton Marshes, 11 February, a Hen Harrier at Lopham Fen, 10 February, Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes (seven), 11 February, Somerleyton Marshes, 13 February and Lopham Fen, 15 February and Barn Owls at Lopham Fen, 10 February, Oulton Marshes, 11 February and Carlton Marshes (three), 12 February.

A Cetti’s Warbler was noted at Carlton Marshes, 11 February, a male Blackcap at Beccles, 12 February, a Bearded Tit at Haddiscoe Island, 13 February and a Kingfisher at Carlton Marshes, 16 February. Stonechats were recorded at Carlton Marshes (two), 11 February, Oulton Marshes (two), 13 February and Haddiscoe Island (two), 14 February.

 

3 to 9 February 2019

Two White-fronted Geese were present at Carlton Marshes and 1,000 Pink-footed Geese at Haddiscoe Island, 3 February. Four Bewick’s Swans flew over A143 at Gillingham on the same day and counts of Wigeon included 300 at Oulton Marshes, 3 February and 120 at Carlton Marshes, 9 February.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Peregrine, a ringtail Hen Harrier, eight Marsh Harriers, six Buzzards, six Short-eared Owls and three Barn Owls, 3 February and a Merlin, 5 February. Elsewhere, a Peregrine was noted at Carlton Marshes, 3 February, Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes (six) and Herringfleet Marshes, 6 February, Short-eared Owls at Carlton Marshes, 3 February and Burgh Castle, 5 February and Barn Owls at Oulton Marshes, 3 February and Lopham Fen, 9 February.

A Bittern was seen at Haddiscoe Island, 5 February, while Little Egrets were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 3 February and Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Carlton Marshes, 6 February.

Finally, notable waders included two Ruff and five Curlews at Haddiscoe Island and 112 Snipe at Herringfleet Marshes, 3 February and the regular Green Sandpiper by Beccles southern relief road the following day.

 

27 January to 2 February 2019

Raptors seen at Haddiscoe Island included a Rough-legged Buzzard, five Buzzards and four Short-eared Owls, 30 January and a Hen Harrier, 1 February. At nearby Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe a Peregrine and nine Marsh Harriers were recorded on 27 January and two Barn Owls on 29 January and at Carlton Marshes a Short-eared Owl on 31 January and six Marsh Harriers and two Barn Owls on 2 February.

A Great White Egret was present at Burgh Castle Marshes and seven Little Egrets at Carlton Marshes, 27 January.

White-fronted Geese were recorded at Burgh Castle (four), 30 January and Carlton Marshes (two), 2 February and Pink-footed Geese at Burgh Castle (8000), 30 January and Haddiscoe Island (5000), 1 February. A count of 119 Mute Swans was made at Flixton (near Bungay), 30 January and a count of 200 Wigeon at Oulton Marshes, 31 January.

Notable passerines included a Chiffchaff at Beccles Common, 28 January, a Grey Wagtail at Beccles Common, 29 January, a Bearded Tit at Haddiscoe Island, 1 February and a male Blackcap at Beccles and a Water Pipit at Carlton Marshes, 2 February.

A Ruff and 12 Snipe were seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 31 January and the regular Green Sandpiper was again on a pool by Beccles southern relief road, 2 February. Woodcock were recorded at Oulton, 28 January and Blundeston Marshes, 29 January.

Finally, an adult Caspian Gull was seen along Ellough Road, Worlingham, 31 January.

A Rough-legged Buzzard was seen at Haddiscoe Island regularly throughout the week. Other raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Merlin, 21 January, a ringtail Hen Harrier, ten Buzzards and four Short-eared Owls, 23 January and a Red Kite, two Peregrines, eight Marsh Harriers and three Barn Owls, 26 January. Peregrines were also seen at Carlton Marshes, 20 January and Burgh Castle and Fritton, 26 January, Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes (nine), 20 January, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 23 January and Castle Marsh, North Cove (three) and Fritton, 26 January and Barn Owls at Oulton Marshes, 20 January, Carlton Marshes (two) and North Cove, 22 January, Ditchingham, 24 January and Herringfleet Marshes, 25 January.

Two Cattle Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes, 20 January, while a Great White Egret was present at Belton Marshes, 26 January, Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (eight), 20 January, Haddiscoe Island, 23 January, Ditchingham, 24 January and Herringfleet Marshes, 25 January and 12 Grey Herons were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 20 January.

Six Whooper Swans flew north-west over Carlton Marshes on 26 January. Five Goosanders flew over Carlton Marshes on 20 January and probably the same five were present on the river at North Cove, 21 January and Beccles, 24 January, while six flew west over Carlton Marshes on 26 January. A count of 140 Teal was made at Herringfleet Marshes, 26 January. Two White-fronted Geese were present at Carlton Marshes, 26 January, while Pink-footed Geese were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (4000), 23 January, Herringfleet Marshes (1730 flew north), 25 January and St Olaves (800 flew north), 26 January.

A Jack Snipe was seen at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 21 January and a Ruff was noted at the same site on 23 January. Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included 183 Black-tailed Godwits and 11 Snipe, 23 January, 630 Lapwings, 25 January and a Ruff and a Dunlin, 26 January and waders at Haddiscoe Island included 500 Lapwings and a Curlew, 23 January and 300 Golden Plovers, 26 January. Four Woodcock were recorded at Redgrave Fen, 20 January, a Green Sandpiper at Earsham, 24 January and 1000 Lapwings at Carlton Marshes, 26 January.

Two Chiffchaffs were seen at Beccles Common, 20 January, a Grey Wagtail at Haddiscoe Island, 21 January, a Brambling at St Olaves, 23 January, two Nuthatches at Ditchingham, 24 January, a Kingfisher at Beccles quay, 25 January and a Water Pipit at Herringfleet Marshes, 26 January. Stonechats were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 21 January, Carlton Marshes, 22 January and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 26 January. Finally, a count of 32 Magpies was made at Carlton Marshes, 20 January.

13 to 19 January 2019

Three Cattle Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes, 19 January, while a Great White Egret was present at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 15 January and Little Egrets were noted at Redgrave Fen, 13 January and Carlton Marshes (eight), 19 January.

Pink-footed Geese were noted at Carlton Marshes (1000 flew over on 14 January) and Haddiscoe Island (400 were present on 19 January) and 230 Greylag Geese were noted at Burgh Castle, 15 January.

 A Lesser Redpoll was seen at Redgrave Fen, 13 January, a Grey Wagtail at Beccles, 15 January and a Stonechat at Herringfleet Marshes, 19 January. Chiffchaffs were noted at Beccles Common, 14 January and Castle Marsh, 15 January and Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (three), 18 January and Herringfleet Marshes (two) 19 January. A count of 80 Pied Wagtails was made at Lopham Fen, 13 January.

 Waders at Haddiscoe Island included a Green Sandpiper, 18 January and 300 Golden Plovers and a Curlew, 19 January and at Burgh Castle 30 Black-tailed Godwits and six Redshanks were noted on 15 January. The regular Green Sandpiper by Beccles southern relief road was recorded until 16 January at least and a Woodcock was seen at nearby Beccles Marshes, 14 January.

 Finally, two adult Yellow-legged Gulls were noted at Carlton Marshes, 19 January.

 

6 to 12 January 2019

The passerine highlight of the week was an unseasonable Yellow-browed Warbler which was trapped and ringed at Burgh Castle, 6 January. Three Chiffchaffs were also recorded at the same site and another Chiffchaff was noted at Carlton Marshes on the same day. Single Water Pipits were recorded at Carlton Marshes and Herringfleet Marshes, 12 January and Stonechats at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 8 January and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 10 January. A Bearded Tit, was noted at Herringfleet Marshes, 9 January and three Bramblings at Ashby and a flock of 30 Siskins at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 10 January.

A Cattle Egret was present at Carlton Marshes throughout the week, with two roosting overnight on 6/7 and 11/12 January. Little Egrets were seen at Herringfleet Marshes (five) and Oulton Marshes, 9 January and Carlton Marshes (seven), 12 January.

Raptors recorded at Haddiscoe Island included a ringtail Hen Harrier and three Short-eared Owls, 10 January, a Peregrine, 11 January and two Rough-legged Buzzards, 12 January. A male Hen Harrier flew north over Carlton Marshes, 7 January. Marsh Harriers were reported from Carlton Marshes (three), 6 January, Herringfleet Marshes (three), 8 January, Somerleyton Marshes (three) and Oulton Marshes, 9 January, Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (four), 10 January and Lopham Fen (two), 12 January, two Short-eared Owls were hunting at Carlton Marshes, 6 January and Barn Owls were seen at Oulton Marshes (two) and Carlton Marshes, 9 January and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 10 January.

Four Goosanders flew over Carlton Marshes, 12 January and a count of 200 Wigeon was made at Oulton Marshes, 9 January. Pink-footed Geese were noted at Wheatacre Marshes (500), 9 January and Oulton Marshes (70), 10 January.

Waders at Herringfleet Marshes included three Ruff, a Dunlin and a Redshank, 8 January and 214 Black-tailed Godwits and 1800 Lapwings, 12 January. A Green Sandpiper was seen beside the Beccles southern relief road regularly throughout the week and another was present at Earsham GP along with a Redshank, 6 January. A count of 520 Lapwings was made at Somerleyton Marshes, 9 January and a Woodcock was seen at St Olaves, 10 January.

Finally, an adult Caspian Gull was seen along Ellough Road, Worlingham, 10 January.

30 December 2018 to 5 January 2019

Two Waxwings were seen at the junction of Beccles Road and Hollow Grove Way in Carlton Colville on 4 and 5 January. Other notable passerines included two Water Pipits at Carlton Marshes, 31 December, a Brambling at St Olaves, 3 January and a Stonechat at Carlton Marshes, 5 January. Grey Wagtails were noted at Beccles, 30 December and Bungay, 3 January, Cetti’s Warblers at Carlton Marshes (three), 31 December and Lopham Fen and North Cove, 1 January and Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen (two) and Burgh Castle, 1 January.

One Cattle Egret was seen at Carlton Marshes throughout the week, with three recorded on 31 December and 1 January. Little Egrets were seen at Carlton Marshes (eight), 1 January and Haddiscoe Island, 3 January.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included a Merlin, ten Marsh Harriers and four Short-eared Owls, 30 December, a ringtail Hen Harrier, 1 January, a Barn Owl, 3 January and a Peregrine, 4 January. Elsewhere, a ringtail Hen Harrier was seen at Carlton Marshes, 2 January, while Peregrines were noted at Burgh Castle and Carlton Marshes, 5 January, Marsh Harriers at Carlton Marshes (five), and North Cove, 1 January and Barn Owls at Carlton Marshes (two), Lopham Fen, and North Cove, 1 January.

Four Goosanders flew east along Oulton Dyke, 30 December and probably the same four flew south-west over Carlton Marshes, 5 January. A single White-fronted Goose was present at Burgh Castle Marshes, 5 January, while counts of Pink-footed Geese included 250 at North Cove, 1 January, 500 at Haddiscoe Island, 3 January, 4500 at Blundeston Marshes and 35 at Carlton Marshes, 5 January.

Waders seen at Haddiscoe Island included a Woodcock, 30 December and 500 Golden Plovers and a Curlew, 3 January. Elsewhere, a Dunlin was present at Carlton Marshes, 30 December,  four Avocets at Burgh Castle Flats and a Woodcock at Lopham Fen, 1 January and a Green Sandpiper on a pool beside Beccles southern relief road, 2 January.

Finally, a Mediterranean Gull was seen at Carlton Marshes, 1 January.

23 to 29 December 2018

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included two Rough-legged Buzzards, 23 December, five Short-eared Owls, 27 December, two Marsh Harriers, 28 December and a ringtail Hen Harrier and a male Merlin, 29 December. Elsewhere, a Peregrine was seen at Castle Marsh, North Cove, 27 December and Marsh Harriers were reported from Lopham Fen, 24 December, Herringfleet Marshes (two), 25 December, Oulton Marshes, 28 December and Carlton Marshes (four), 29 December; Short-eared Owls from Blundeston Marshes, 24 December and Burgh Castle, 27 December and Barn Owls from Withersdale Street, 24 December, Carlton Marshes, 25 December and North Cove, 26 December.

Three Cattle Egrets roosted at Carlton Marshes on the evening of 28 December. Two Great White Egrets flew north over Herringfleet Marshes late afternoon on 25 December, while Little Egrets were recorded at Herringfleet Marshes (two), 25 December, Carlton Marshes (six) and Oulton Marshes (two), 28 December and Weybread GP, 29 December.

A Goosander was seen at Carlton Marshes, 25 December. A White-fronted Goose flew north over Carlton Marshes on 24 December, 38 Pink-footed Geese were present at Oulton Marshes, 28 December and an escaped Red-breasted Goose was noted at Lopham Fen, 29 December.

A Water Pipit was present at Carlton Marshes, 24 December. A Nuthatch was recorded at Flixton (near Bungay), 24 December, a Grey Wagtail at Beccles Common and two Bearded Tits at Herringfleet Marshes, 25 December and 45 Siskins and eight Lesser Redpolls at Waveney Forest, Fritton, 28 December. Chiffchaffs were reported from Carlton Marshes, 25 December and Oulton Marshes, 26 December, Cetti’s Warbler from Lopham Fen, 24 December and Oulton Marshes (two), 28 December and Stonechats from Oulton Marshes, 26 December and Carlton Marshes, 28 December. Finally, waders included a Woodcock at Oulton Marshes, 24 December, 24 Black-tailed Godwits at Burgh Castle, 25 December and a Dunlin at Carlton Marshes, 26 December.

16 to 22 December 2018

A Cattle Egret was seen at Carlton Marshes from 20 to 22 December, while Little Egrets were noted at Carlton Marshes (two), 17 December, Oulton Marshes, 21 December and Haddiscoe Island, 22 December.

Raptors at Haddiscoe Island included four Short-eared Owls, 16 December, a ringtail Hen Harrier, 17 December and a Rough-legged Buzzard, a Peregrine and a Barn Owl, 22 December. Elsewhere, a Red Kite was seen at Ellingham, 16 December and a Peregrine at Carlton Marshes, 17 December. Marsh Harriers were noted at St Olaves (seven), 16 December and Carlton Marshes (three), 17 December, while two Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl were seen at Carlton Marshes, 16 December, with a further Barn Owl reported from Beccles Marshes, 22 December.

Six Goosanders were seen at Carlton Marshes, 18 December and 800 Pink-footed Geese at Haddiscoe Island, 22 December.

A Chiffchaff and three Water Pipits were seen at Carlton Marshes, 16 December and three Grey Wagtails at Beccles, 17 December. Stonechats were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 16 December and Carlton Marshes, 17 December.A count of 1000 Lapwings was made at Carlton Marshes on 21 December and 51 Curlews were noted at Haddiscoe Island, 22 December. Woodcock were reported from Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 16 December and Lopham Fen, 22 December.

9 to 15 December 2018

Four Cattle Egrets flew into roost at Carlton Marshes at dusk on 9 December. Two Cattle Egrets were also noted at Carlton Marshes from 10 to 12 December and one on 13 December, with one at nearby Castle Marsh, North Cove on 14 December. Great White Egrets were seen at Haddiscoe Island, 9 December and Carlton Marshes, 11 December and Little Egrets at Homersfield, 9 December, Beccles Common and Herringfleet Marshes, 10 December and Carlton Marshes (three), Worlingham (two), 15 December.

Two first-winter Rough-legged Buzzards, a Peregrine, ten Marsh Harriers, eight Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl were recorded at Haddiscoe Island, 9 December. A Red Kite flew over Carlton Marshes, 9 December and Marsh Harriers were noted at Redgrave Fen and Oulton Marshes, 9 December, Herringfleet Marshes, 10 December, Carlton Marshes (four), 12 December and Burgh Castle (two), 15 December. Two Short-eared Owls were hunting at Carlton Marshes, 10 December, while Barn Owls were reported from Carlton Marshes (three) and Oulton Marshes, 9 December and Herringfleet Marshes, 10 December.

Four Goosanders were seen on the river at Worlingham, 12 December and four also flew west along Oulton Dyke, 15 December, while Pink-footed Geese were recorded at Haddiscoe Island (385), 9 December and Oulton (40), 10 December.

Waders at Haddiscoe Island on 9 December included 1230 Lapwings, 120 Golden Plovers, 144 Curlews, a Spotted Redshank and a (Common) Redshank, while elsewhere a Curlew and 11 Black-tailed Godwits were seen at Herringfleet Marshes, 10 December and a (Common) Redshank at Burgh Castle, 15 December. A combined count of 136 Snipe was made at Carlton and Oulton Marshes, 9 December, while Woodcock were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two) and Oulton Marshes, 9 December and Lopham Fen, 12 December.

A Cetti’s Warbler was noted at Lopham Fen and two Water Pipits at Haddiscoe Island, 9 December and a Grey Wagtail at Beccles Common, 11 December. Stonechats were recorded at Carlton Marshes, 9 December and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (two), 10 December, Bearded Tits at Lopham Fen (two), 9 December and Herringfleet Marshes (two), 10 December and Kingfishers at Homersfield, 9 December and Herringfleet Marshes, 10 December.

2 to 8 December 2018

The long-staying adult Cattle Egret at Carlton Marshes was still present and was joined by three others regularly through the week. A Great White Egret was seen at Haddiscoe Island, 2 December, while Little Egrets were reported from Carlton Marshes (three), Worlingham (two) and Haddiscoe Island, 2 December, Oulton Marshes, 3 December and Herringfleet Marshes (two) and Beccles Common, 8 December.

Raptors recorded at Haddiscoe Island included a Rough-legged Buzzard, a Merlin and three Marsh Harriers, 2 December and seven Short-eared Owls, 4 December. Marsh Harriers were also noted at Castle Marsh, North Cove (two), 2 December and Carlton Marshes (eight), 8 December, a Short-eared Owl was hunting at Carlton Marshes, 4 December and Barn Owls were recorded at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe and Worlingham Marshes, 2 December and Carlton Marshes (three), 7 December.

Six Goosanders were present at Carlton Marshes, 2 December, while Pink-footed Geese were noted at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe (200), 2 December, Castle Marsh (seven), 3 December and Somerleyton Marshes (120), 8 December.

Notable waders included a Black-tailed Godwit, a Redshank and 32 Curlews at Haddiscoe Island, single Curlews at Carlton Marshes and Castle Marshes and a Woodcock at Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, 2 December.

Further records from Carlton Marshes included a Water Pipit, 2 December, a Cetti’s Warbler, 4 December, a Chiffchaff and a Kingfisher, 6 December and a Stonechat, 8 December, with another Chiffchaff seen at Beccles Common, 6 December.
